In the sequel, The Empire Strikes Back, Luke receives extensive Jedi training from the elderly ( and only surviving ) Jedi Master Yoda ( Frank Oz ), even as he learns that Vader is in fact his father, former Jedi Anakin Skywalker.

In Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace ( 1999 ), Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn ( Liam Neeson ) discovers nine year old Anakin Skywalker ( Jake Lloyd ), whom he believes to be the " Chosen One " of Jedi prophecy who is destined to bring balance to the Force ; the boy is eventually paired with Qui-Gon's apprentice, the young Obi-Wan Kenobi ( Ewan McGregor ), who promises to train him.

Once corrupted, Vader helps Palpatine hunt down and destroy nearly all of the Jedi, leaving very few left, such as Jedi Master Yoda, and Obi-Wan-Kenobi.

Younglings were seen training with Jedi Grand Master Yoda in a scene from Attack of the Clones and when Anakin Skywalker turns to the dark side in Revenge of the Sith.

* Padawan: A Youngling who successfully completes training then undergoes Padawan training under the tutelage of a Jedi Knight ( or Jedi Master in some cases ).

The sequel, Attack of the Clones, establishes that the Jedi forswear all emotional attachments, including romantic love, which proves problematic when Anakin, now a young adult ( Hayden Christensen ), falls in love with Padmé Amidala ( Natalie Portman ), whom Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi had served ten years before.

Banished by his tribe for his clumsiness, he is nearly killed by a federation transport, only to be saved at the last minute by Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn ( Liam Neeson ).

In Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace ( 1999 ), set 32 years before A New Hope, Obi-Wan Kenobi, now played by Ewan McGregor, is seen as a young Jedi Padawan, in which role he accompanies his master Qui-Gon Jinn ( Liam Neeson ) in negotiations with the Trade Federation, who are blockading the planet Naboo.

In escaping the blockade, the ship is damaged and makes an unscheduled landing on Tatooine, where Qui-Gon meets Anakin Skywalker ( Jake Lloyd ), a young slave who shows such tremendous potential in the Force that Qui-Gon believes him to be the " Chosen One " of Jedi prophecy, destined to bring balance to the Force by destroying the Sith.

The Jedi Apprentice books follow his adventures as Qui-Gon Jinn's Padawan.

In Star Wars fiction, Qui-Gon is best known as the mentor of the Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi, as well as the one who discovers Anakin Skywalker, who later becomes Darth Vader.

Qui-Gon is introduced in The Phantom Menace as a wise and powerful Jedi Master and the teacher of the 26-year-old Obi-Wan Kenobi.

On Coruscant, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan return to the Jedi Temple and appear before the Council to give an update on the status of their mission.

There, Qui-Gon expresses his belief that Anakin is the " Chosen One ," and the Council reluctantly agree to test the boy for Jedi potential.

With his dying words, Qui-Gon requests Obi-Wan to train Anakin, to which his apprentice agrees upon being promoted to the rank of Jedi Knight for his victory over a Sith Lord.

In The Captive Temple, Xanatos attacks the Jedi Temple and nearly assassinates Yoda, but Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan thwart his plans, and in The Day of Reckoning, when they chase Xanatos back to his homeworld Telos, the fallen Jedi refuses to surrender and commits suicide.

In Legacy of the Jedi, set during both Qui-Gon's Padawan and Master years, Qui-Gon and his master Count Dooku are sent to accompany Senator Blix Annon on a diplomatic assignment.

The two battle and Dooku lets his anger get the best of him, but Qui-Gon prevents his master from violating the Jedi Code by committing cold-blooded murder.

Years after their first encounter, Qui-Gon, along with Obi-Wan, again encounters Nod, and once again the fallen Jedi is incarcerated for his crimes.

In Secrets of the Jedi, set seven years before The Phantom Menace, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are paired with Jedi Master Adi Gallia and her Padawan Siri Tachi.

The mission, which results in Qui-Gon and Adi being separated from Obi-Wan and Siri, leads to the discovery of romantic feelings between the two Jedi Padawans.

Qui-Gon detects these emotions and warns Obi-Wan of his own example with Tahl, a female Jedi, whose murder nearly pushed him over the edge to the dark side.

In this story arc, which takes place during the same year Qui-Gon takes Obi-Wan as his apprentice, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan fight in the titular conflict along with other Jedi such as Plo Koon and Quinlan Vos, and Qui-Gon ends up saving Nute Gunray, the future Trade Federation viceroy.

In The Phantom Menace, C-3PO meets his future partner, R2-D2, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, Queen Padmé Amidala of Naboo, and Jar Jar Binks ; C-3PO and R2-D2 co-operate to perfect Anakin's podracer for the race " Boonta Eve Classic ".

After a failed attempt to kill the Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi ( Ewan McGregor ) and Qui-Gon Jinn ( Liam Neeson ), Gunray meets with Naboo's Queen, Padmé Amidala ( Natalie Portman ), and feigns ignorance.

In this film, Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn discovers Shmi Skywalker and her son Anakin as slaves on the planet Tatooine.

She welcomes Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn ( Liam Neeson ) into their home, and tells him that Anakin has no father ; she simply became pregnant with him.

The Republic sends two Jedi ambassadors, Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi, to oversee the situation and negotiate with the Trade Federation.

However, Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi are hot on the trail of the terrorists and thwart their plans.

In his mind, Anakin fights off shadows of long-deceased Jedi such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu and Qui-Gon Jinn.

The books follow the adventures of young Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi and his Master, Qui-Gon Jinn, before the events of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

Unfortunately, Qui-Gon Jinn, a Jedi Master without an apprentice, finds the boy to be aggressive and unpredictable, as shown in Obi-Wan's sparring match with fellow Jedi student Bruck Chun.
