Expressed differently: if the price for becoming a faithful follower of Jesus Christ is some form of self-destruction, whether of the body or of the mind -- sacrificium corporis, sacrificium intellectus -- then there is no alternative but that the price remain unpaid.

We have not the leisure, or the patience, or the skill, to comprehend what was working in the mind and heart of a then recent graduate from the Harvard Divinity School who would muster the audacity to contradict his most formidable instructor, the majesterial Andrews Norton, by saying that, while he believed Jesus `` like other religious teachers '', worked miracles, `` I see not how a miracle proves a doctrine ''.

Since the mid-1890s Schweitzer had formed the inner resolve that it was needful for him as a Christian to repay to the world something for the happiness which it had given to him, and he determined that he would pursue his younger interests until the age of thirty and then give himself to serving humanity, with Jesus serving as his example.

According to Christian theologian Alister McGrath, the Jewish Christians affirmed every aspect of then contemporary Second Temple Judaism with the addition of the belief that Jesus was the messiah, with Isaiah 49: 6, " an explicit parallel to 42: 6 " quoted by Paul in Acts 13: 47 and reinterpreted by Justin the Martyr.

The Sermon on the Mount records that Jesus taught that if someone comes to harm you, then one must turn the other cheek.

The Bible describes Jesus ' tomb as being outside the city wall, as was normal for burials across the ancient world, which were regarded as unclean, but the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is in the heart of Hadrian's city, well within the Old City walls, which were built by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in 1538 Some have claimed that the city had been much narrower in Jesus ' time, with the site then having been outside the walls ; since Herod Agrippa ( 41 – 44 ) is recorded by history as extending the city to the north ( beyond the present northern walls ), the required repositioning of the western wall is traditionally attributed to him as well.

The synoptic gospels, first Mark, and then Matthew and Luke, depict Jesus as presiding over the Last Supper.

In this passage Jesus says that an offended Christian should draw the offender's fault to his attention at first privately ; then, if the offender refuses to listen, to bring one or two others, that there may be more than a single witness to the charge ; next, if the offender still refuses to listen, to bring the matter before the church, and if the offender refuses to listen to the church, to treat him as " a Gentile and a tax collector ".

There is a broad disagreement over chronology between Matthew, Mark and Luke on one hand and John on the other: all four agree that Jesus ' public ministry began with an encounter with John the Baptist, but Matthew, Mark and Luke follow this with an account of teaching and healing in Galilee, then a trip to Jerusalem where there is an incident in the Temple, climaxing with the crucifixion on the day of the Passover holiday.

Joseph Dongell, professor at Asbury Theological Seminary, states " the most conscipuous feature of Ephesians 1: 3 – 2: 10 is the phrase ' in Christ ', which occurs twelve times in Ephesians 1: 3 – 4 alone ... this means that Jesus Christ himself is the chosen one, the predestined one.

The Encyclopedia of Twentieth Century Architecture states that the statuary was indeed Mary the mother of Jesus, also noting Gaudi's devoutness, and notes that the owner decided not to include it after Semana Trágica, an outbreak of anticlericalism in the city.

In Matthew 24 Jesus states:

According to Cyril's theology, there were two states for the Son: the state that existed prior to the Son ( or Word / Logos ) becoming enfleshed in the person of Jesus and the state that actually became enfleshed.

Some Christians adhere to New Covenant theology, which states that Jews have rejected Jesus as the Messiah and Son of God have ceased being the Chosen People.

One possible construction of the " internal evidence " states that the Beloved Disciple wrote an account of the life of Jesus.

The proclaimed Roman Catholic dogma states " that the most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instance of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin.

The movement states that Jesus is the Jewish Messiah, and generally that he is part of the Trinity, and salvation is only achieved through acceptance of Jesus as one's savior.

John Painter states that phrase " who was called Christ " is used by Josephus in this passage " by way of distinguishing him from others of the same name such as the high priest Jesus son of Damneus, or Jesus son of Gamaliel " both having been mentioned by Josephus in this context.

James Dunn states that there is " broad consensus " among scholars regarding the nature of an authentic reference to Jesus in the Testimonium and what the passage would look like without the interpolations.
