Even his name is variable: the Syriac version of Eusebius calls him throughout not Matthias but " Tolmai ", not to be confused with Bartholomew ( which means Son of Tolmai ) who was originally one of the twelve Apostles ; Clement of Alexandria says some identified him with Zacchaeus ; the Clementine Recognitions identify him with Barnabas ; Hilgenfeld thinks he is the same as Nathanael in the Gospel of John.

Under the Constitution of the United Kingdom, the Prime Minister's role has evolved, based often on the individual's personal appeal and strength of character, as contrasted between, for example, Winston Churchill as against Clement Attlee, Margaret Thatcher as against John Major.

To the north and south of the rock of the Doms, partly on the site of the Bishop's Palace, which had been enlarged by John XXII, was built the Palace of the Popes, in the form of an imposing fortress consisting of towers, linked to each other, and named as follows: De la Campane, de Trouillas, de la Glacière, de Saint-Jean, des Saints-Anges ( Benedict XII ), de la Gâche, de la Garde-Robe ( Clement VI ), de Saint-Laurent ( Innocent VI ).

The Catholic Church successfully reorganised and centralized its administration under Clement V and John XXII.

Popes such as John XXII, Benedict XII and Clement VI reportedly spent fortunes on expensive wardrobe, and at banquets, silver and gold plates were used.

In March 1761, shortly after his death, Pope Clement XIII rejected the succession of Clemens August's brother Cardinal John Theodore of Bavaria as Archbishop and Prince-Elector of Cologne since the pope entertained some doubt on John Theodore's " moral conduct ".

In Ferrara, the death of Azzo VIII d ' Este without legitimate heirs ( 1308 ) encouraged Clement to bring Ferrara under his direct rule: for only nine years, however, was it governed by his appointed vicar, Robert d ' Anjou, King of Naples, before the citizens recalled the Este from exile ( 1317 ); interdiction and excommunications were in vain: in 1332 John XXII was obliged to name three Este brothers as his vicars in Ferrara.

This diversity was recognized in the rubrics of the Roman Missal from the 1604 typical edition of Pope Clement VIII to the 1962 edition of Pope John XXIII: " Si altare sit ad orientem, versus populum …"

In October 1660, at Charing Cross or Tyburn, London, ten were publicly hanged, drawn and quartered: Thomas Harrison, John Jones, Adrian Scroope, John Carew, Thomas Scot, and Gregory Clement, who had signed the king's death warrant ; the preacher Hugh Peters ; Francis Hacker and Daniel Axtell, who commanded the guards at the king's trial and execution ; and John Cooke, the solicitor who directed the prosecution.

He accompanied Sir John Russell, 1st Earl of Bedford to Rome to help petition Pope Clement VII to annul the marriage of Henry VIII to his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, an embassy whose goal was to make Henry free to marry Anne Boleyn.

Among the early arrivals were Joseph Joscak, Clement Ihrisky, Peter Ruzak, H. Getting and John and Anna Cimbora.

Once the 14-year-old king had regained control of the capital and then the whole country, Grindcobbe was tried in the Moot Hall ( on the site of the present-day W H Smith stationery shop, where a plaque commemorates the event ) and adjudged a ' traitor ' alongside John Ball (' the mad priest of Kent ', one of the rebel leaders who had escaped from Smithfield, London to Coventry ) and more than a dozen others.

Richard " Magic Dick " Salwitz, Billy Branch, John Popper, Tom Ball, " Dirty " Patrick Walsh, Big Dave Perea, Joe Filisko, Miles Ryan and others are keeping the harmonica tradition alive.

Major was born at the St. Helier Hospital in Sutton, Surrey, the son of Gwen Major and former Music Hall performer Tom Major-Ball ( né Abraham Thomas Ball ), who was 64 years old when John was born.

While Wycliffe and other Lollards opposed the revolt, one of the peasants ’ leaders, John Ball, preached Lollardy.

The names of some of its leaders, John Ball, Wat Tyler and Jack Straw, are still familiar in popular culture, although little is known of them.

When the Kentish rebels arrived at Blackheath on 12 June, the renegade Lollard priest, John Ball, preached a sermon including the famous question that has echoed down the centuries: " When Adam delved and Eve span, who was then the gentleman?

The nobles quickly re-established their control with the help of a hastily organised militia of 7000, and most of the other leaders were pursued, captured and executed, including John Ball.

An anonymous play was published in London in 1593 entitled " The Life and Death of Jack Straw ," in which Straw, Wat Tyler, John Ball, and others appear as characters.
