The Bloomsbury Group — or Bloomsbury Set — was an enormously influential group of associated English writers, intellectuals, philosophers and artists, the best known members of which included Virginia Woolf, John Maynard Keynes, E. M. Forster and Lytton Strachey.

Four years later, the Mission property was auctioned off under questionable circumstances for $ 710 worth of tallow and hides ( equivalent to $ 15, 000 in 2004 dollars ) to Englishman John ( Don Juan ) Forster ( Governor Pío Pico's brother-in-law, whose family would take up residence in the friars ' quarters for the next twenty years ) and his partner James McKinley.

At the close of his indentures in 1720, Baker went on a visit to John Forster, a relative, who had a deaf-mute daughter, then eight years old.

In 1863, an Englishman named John ( Don Juan ) Forster ( Pio Pico's brother-in-law ) paid off Pico's gambling debts in return for the deed to the ranch.

He built a second engine, with the assistance of the, later to be famous, Timothy Hackworth, his foreman smith, and his principal engine wright, Jonathan Forster, using the 1812 twin cylinder plan of John Blenkinsop and Matthew Murray and a return flue boiler.

This include E. M. Forster (( 1879-1970 ), John Galsworthy (( 1867-1933 ) ( Nobel Prize in Literature, 1932 ), whose novels include The Forsyte Saga, Arnold Bennett ( 1867-1931 ) author of The Old Wives ' Tale, and H. G. Wells ( 1866-1946 ).

Ainsworth also introduced Dickens to John Forster at Kensal Lodge, initiating a close friendship between the two.

John Forster wrote to Ainsworth to offer assistance in writing the novel, but there is no evidence that Ainsworth accepted.

Jean Bodin, writing in the sixteenth century, may have been the seminal thinker, but it was the vastly influential John Austin who set out the main lines of the concept as now understood.

The first patent on a ballpoint pen was issued on 30 October 1888, to John Loud, a leather tanner, who was attempting to make a writing instrument that would be able to write on his leather products, which then-common fountain pens could not do.

Some linguists, such as John DeFrancis and J. Marshall Unger have argued that genuine ideographic writing systems with the same capacities as natural languages do not exist.

John Dryden in the 16 – 17th century and Alexander Pope in the 18th century were both well known for their writing in heroic couplets.

In the 1672 book " New England Rarities Discovered " author John Josselyn described cranberries, writing:

Larry Gragg highlights Mather ’ s cloudy thinking and confusion between sympathy for the possessed, and the boundlessness of spectral evidence when Mather stated, “ the devil have sometimes represented the shapes of persons not only innocent, but also the very virtuous .” And writing in the early 1980s, John Demos seemed to consider Mather a moderating influence on the trials.

St John Damascene, writing in the 8th century AD, also notes of an earlier sect called the " Cathari ", in his book On Heresies, taken from the epitome provided by Epiphanius of Salamis in his Panarion.

The " puzzle " approach was carried even further into ingenious and seemingly impossible plots by John Dickson Carr — also writing as Carter Dickson — who is regarded as the master of the " locked room mystery ", and Cecil Street, who also wrote as John Rhode, whose detective, Dr. Priestley, specialised in elaborate technical devices, while in the US the whodunnit was adopted and extended by Rex Stout and Ellery Queen, among others.

Thomas acknowledged that he returned to Wales when he had difficulty writing, and John Ackerman argues that " His inspiration and imagination were rooted in his Welsh background ".

Many Protestant churches are now organized by either congregational or presbyterian church polities, both descended from the writings of John Calvin, a Protestant reformer working and writing independently following the break with the Roman Catholic Church precipitated by The Ninety-Five Theses of Martin Luther.

For instance, the writing style is different, the author for reasons of humility refers to himself instead as " the disciple whom Jesus loved ," while John in Revelations refers to himself as John at least five times.

Gonzo journalism has now become a bona-fide style of writing that concerns itself with " telling it like it is ", similar to the New Journalism of the 1960s, led primarily by Tom Wolfe and also championed by Lester Bangs, George Plimpton, Terry Southern, and John Birmingham — in fact, gonzo journalism is considered a sub-genre of new journalism.
