This decree was issued by the new king and unanimously supported by the Dominion governments, The king's authority to withhold from the lawful wife of a prince the attribute thitherto accorded to the wives of other modern British princes was addressed by the Crown's legal authorities: On 14 April 1937, Attorney General Sir Donald Somervell submitted to Home Secretary Sir John Simon a memorandum summarising the views of Lord Advocate T. The county was named for Sir George Carteret, one of the 17th century English Lords Proprietor, or for his descendant and heir John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville.

However, the first proven immigrants are Edward Shanklin Jr., Matthew and David Rolston, John Huston and his sons James and Granville Huston.

John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville, 7th Seigneur of Sark, KG, PC (; 22 April 1690 – 22 January 1763 ), commonly known by his earlier title as Lord Carteret, was a British statesman and Lord President of the Council from 1751 to 1763 ; effectively leader of the country when Spencer Compton was Prime Minister.

John was the son of George Carteret, 1st Baron Carteret ( 1667 – 1695 ), by his marriage with Grace Granville ( 3 September 1654-18 October 1744 ), daughter of Sir John Granville, 1st Earl of Bath ( 29 August 1628-August 1701 ).

Other notable early settlers of Henry County include Colonel George Waller, Captain George Hairston and Major John Redd, all of whom were present at the surrender of General Cornwallis at Yorktown ; Col. Abraham Penn, a native of Amherst County, Virginia, who led his Henry County militia troops with the intention of joining General Nathaniel Greene at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse during the Revolutionary War ; and Brigadier General Joseph Martin, for whom Martinsville is named.

The most important works that occupied Flaxman in the years next following this appointment were the monument to Mrs Baring in Micheldever church, the richest of all his monuments in relief ( 1805 – 1811 ); that for the Worsley family at Campsall church, Yorkshire, which is the next richest ; those to Sir Joshua Reynolds for St Paul's ( 1807 ); to Captain Webbe for India ( 1810 ); to Captains Walker and Beckett for Leeds ( 1811 ); to Lord Cornwallis for Prince of Wales's Island ( 1812 ); and to Sir John Moore for Glasgow ( 1813 ).

In a letter to General John Butler, Greene writes " I have some expectation of collecting a force sufficient in this County to enable me to act offensively and in turn race Lord Cornwallis as he has done me.

Notable prisoners included John Burgoyne, Charles Cornwallis and John Andre.
