The religious and mythical themes in Star Wars were inspired by Lucas ' interest in the writings of mythologist Joseph Campbell, and he would eventually come to identify strongly with the Eastern religious philosophies he studied and incorporated into his films, which were a major inspiration for " the Force.

It was claimed by Joseph Campbell and Robert Morton Robinson, authors of A Skeleton Key to Finnegan's Wake, that much of the play was the result of unacknowledged borrowing from James Joyce's last work.

The publication in 1944 of the first in-depth study and analysis of Joyce's final text — A Skeleton Key to Finnegans Wake by mythologist Joseph Campbell and Henry Morton Robinson — tried to prove to a skeptical public that if the hidden key or " Monomyth " could be found, then the book could be read as a novel with characters, plot, and an internal coherence.

Henry Morton Robinson ( September 7, 1898 – January 13, 1961 ) was an American novelist, best known for A Skeleton Key to Finnegans Wake written with Joseph Campbell and his 1950 novel The Cardinal, which Time magazine reported was " The year's most popular book, fiction or nonfiction.
