* 1774 – British scientist Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen gas, corroborating the prior discovery of this element by German-Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele.

Arthur Aikin studied chemistry under Joseph Priestley in the New College at Hackney, and gave attention to the practical applications of the science.

Lavoisier discovered that Henry Cavendish's " inflammable air ," which Lavoisier had termed hydrogen ( Greek for " water-former "), combined with oxygen to produce a dew which, as Joseph Priestley had reported, appeared to be water.

Jöns Jacob Berzelius, Joseph Priestley, Humphry Davy, Linus Pauling, Gilbert N. Lewis, Josiah Willard Gibbs, Robert Burns Woodward, and Fritz Haber also made notable contributions.

B. Priestley and Joseph Rotblat.

Benjamin Franklin conducted extensive research on electricity in the 18th century, as documented by Joseph Priestley ( 1767 ) History and Present Status of Electricity, with whom Franklin carried on extended correspondence.

Charles-Augustin de Coulomb developed the law of electrostatic attraction in 1785 as an outgrowth of his attempt to investigate the law of electrical repulsions as stated by Joseph Priestley in England.

Despite this uncertainty, fourteen individuals have been identified as having verifiably attended Lunar Society meetings regularly over a long period during its most productive eras: these are Matthew Boulton, Erasmus Darwin, Thomas Day, Richard Lovell Edgeworth, Samuel Galton, Jr., James Keir, Joseph Priestley, William Small, Jonathan Stokes, James Watt, Josiah Wedgwood, John Whitehurst and William Withering.

Joseph Priestley, then living in Leeds, became associated with the Society in 1767 when Darwin and Wedgwood became involved with his work on electricity.

In late 1780 the nature of the society was to change again with the move to Birmingham of Joseph Priestley.

Joseph Priestley himself was driven from the town, leaving England entirely for the United States in 1794, William Withering's house was invaded by rioters and Matthew Boulton and James Watt had to arm their employees to protect the Soho Manufactory.

Nitrogen was also studied at about the same time by Carl Wilhelm Scheele, Henry Cavendish, and Joseph Priestley, who referred to it as burnt air or phlogisticated air.

Oxygen was independently discovered by Carl Wilhelm Scheele, in Uppsala, in 1773 or earlier, and Joseph Priestley in Wiltshire, in 1774, but Priestley is often given priority because his work was published first.

Joseph Priestley, for example, in referring to the reaction of steam on iron, whilst fully acknowledging that the iron gains weight as it binds with oxygen to form a calx, iron oxide, iron also loses “ the basis of inflammable air ( hydrogen ), and this is the substance or principle, to which we give the name phlogiston .” Following Lavoisier ’ s description of oxygen as the oxidizing principle ( hence the name oxygen: oxus

Adams himself preferred Unitarian preachers, but he was opposed to Joseph Priestley's sympathies with the French Revolution, and would attend other churches if the only nearby Congregational / Unitarian one was composed of followers of Priestley.

He regularly attended Joseph Priestley's Pennsylvania church when he was nearby, and said that Priestley's theology was his own, and there is no doubt Priestley should be identified as Unitarian.

However as he grew older his views became more typically Unitarian, though he rejected some of the views of Joseph Priestley and the Transcendentalists.

In 1774, Joseph Priestley ( 1733 – 1804 ) discovered oxygen.

A letter to Joseph Priestley, in January 1800, indicated that he had been planning the University for decades before its founding.

The earliest cited English usage in connection with marital status is from a manuscript of c. 1200, when Mary ( mother of Jesus ) is described as “ handfast ( to ) a good man called Joseph ”.

Joseph Rockley Merrick ( c. 1835 – 1897 ) was the son of London-born weaver Barnabas Merrick who moved to Leicester during the 1820s or 1830s, and his third wife Sarah Rockley.

A pamphlet entitled " The Autobiography of Joseph Carey Merrick ", produced c. 1884 to accompany his exhibition, states that he started to display symptoms at approximately five years of age, with " thick lumpy skin ... like that of an elephant, and almost the same colour ".
