In 1915, together with Joseph Trumpeldor, a one-armed veteran of the Russo-Japanese War, he created the Zion Mule Corps, which consisted of several hundred Jewish men, mainly Russians, who had been exiled from Palestine by the Turks and had settled in Egypt.
He quit the mainstream Zionist movement in 1923, however, due to differences of opinion between him and its chairman, Chaim Weizmann, and established the new revisionist party called Alliance of Revisionists-Zionists and its youth movement, Betar ( a Hebrew acronym for the " League of Joseph Trumpeldor ").
The city was named for the eight people, including Joseph Trumpeldor, who died in 1920 defending Tel Hai.
On March 1, the death at Tel Hai of Joseph Trumpeldor at the hands of a Shiite group from Southern Lebanon, caused deep concerns among Zionist leaders, who made numerous requests to the Mandate administration to address the Yishuv's security and forbid a pro-Syrian public rally.
Joseph Trumpeldor, the leader of the Jewish settlers that were killed by remnants of the Arab Revolt at Tel Hai in 1920, serves as the primary role model of the Betar.

The Zionist pioneers in Tel Hai, headed by Joseph Trumpeldor were in fact neutral in this conflict-they wanted the area to be neither Arab-ruled nor French-ruled, but restored to British rule which they hoped would eventually lead to its becoming part of the future Jewish state ( which indeed ultimately happened ).
A national monument in Upper Galilee, Israel commemorates the deaths of eight Jews, six men and two women, among them the one-armed Jewish fighter, a Russian Jew named Joseph Trumpeldor, who died in an engagement on 1 March 1920, with Bedouins, who had been attacking settlements in the area.
Joseph Trumpeldor is also considered to be one of the early icons of the Labor Zionist movement in Palestine.
