At the age of 14, he is sent to reform school by a sympathetic Judge Willoughby ( Morris Carnovsky ) for stealing a pistol from a hardware store, despite the testimony of his friends Dave ( Nedrick Young ) and Clyde ( Harry Lewis ), his older sister Ruby and others that he would never kill any living creature.

A man alleged to be a soldier in the Maryland State Militia was detained in Fort McHenry, and Judge Giles in Baltimore issued a writ of habeas corpus, but the fort's commander, Major W. W. Sweet stated that 106 men were arrested, including Walsh and Judge Buckner Stith Morris of the Circuit Court of Illinois, treasurer of the organization.

The other seven were all found by a jury to be not guilty of conspiracy, but five of the defendants were found guilty of inciting a riot, and Judge Hoffman sentenced each of the five to the maximum penalty: five years in prison and a fine of $ 5, 000, plus court costs.

In addition Judge Hoffman sentenced all eight defendants and both of their lawyers ( William Kunstler and Leonard Weinglass ) to lengthy jail terms for contempt of court.

Among other things, the appeals court found that Judge Hoffman had not sufficiently measured the biases of the jury and that he had exhibited a " deprecatory and often antagonistic attitude toward the defense.

Goulden conducted an in-depth investigation of Judge Hoffman and pointed out that he had an abrasive reputation among Chicago lawyers even before his most famous case.

Kunstler also sparred with Judge Julius Hoffman, on one occasion remarking ( with respect to the number of federal marshals ): " this courtroom has the appearance of an armed camp.

Early in the course of the trial, Black Panther Party activist Bobby Seale hurled bitter attacks at Judge Hoffman in court, calling him a " fascist dog ," a " honky ," a " pig ," and a " racist ," among other things.

Ultimately, Judge Hoffman severed Seale from the case, sentencing him to four years in prison for contempt of court, one of the longest sentences ever handed down for that offense in the US up to that time.

On January 3, 1974, a U. S. District Court Judge Julius J. Hoffman dismissed a 4-year-old case against 12 members of the Weatherman faction of the Students for a Democratic Society, which included Bernardine Dohrn ; she was charged with leading the riotous " Days of Rage "

There was Judge Julius J. Hoffman, an equally combative presence on the bench of Federal District Court.

Judge Hoffman imposed prison sentences on the five, as well as on Mr. Kunstler, whom he held in contempt.

None of them served any time in prison because an appeals court threw out the convictions and rebuked Judge Hoffman for unseemly conduct in court and procedural errors.
