In 1807 Portugal refused Napoleon Bonaparte's demand to accede to the Continental System of embargo against the United Kingdom ; a French invasion under General Junot followed, and Lisbon was captured on 8 December 1807.

General Jean-Andoche Junot led the Westphalians to join the attack and again captured Utiza, which however was set on fire by the departing Russians.

Jean-Andoche Junot, 1st Duke of Abrantès ( 24 September 1771 – 29 July 1813 ) was a French general during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.

Four days after the Battle of Roliça, the army of Wellesley ( later known as the Duke of Wellington ) was attacked by a French army under General Junot near the village of Vimeiro.

Soon afterwards, the flanking attack was beaten off and Junot retreated towards Torres Vedras having lost 2, 000 men and 13 cannon, compared to 700 Anglo-Portuguese losses.

After the comprehensive French defeat, Junot was willing to offer complete capitulation.

Wellesley's initial victory over Junot at Vimeiro ( 21 August 1808 ) was wiped out by his superiors in the Convention of Cintra ( 30 August 1808 ).

Following her divorce from Philippe Junot, she was briefly engaged to Robertino Rossellini, the son of Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman.

Princess Caroline's first husband was Philippe Junot ( born 19 April 1940 ), a Parisian banker.

General Junot's force was close to the battlefield and was urged to attack the Russians by Murat, but Junot did nothing and the opportunity for a decisive victory passed.

This enabled a British army under Arthur Wellesley to be landed in Portugal where, aided by Portuguese troops, defeated Junot at the Battle of Vimeiro ; this first French invasion was ended by the Convention of Sintra negotiated by his superiors, which shamefully allowed Junot's men to withdraw unmolested with their plunder.

The French were under the command of General Henri François, Comte Delaborde These troops were sent by Junot to harass and hold the British while he brought his larger army into position to oppose the Anglo-Portuguese forces.
