The group consists of two pairs of brothers from Hampton, Virginia and Charlotte, North Carolina: Cedric & Joel Hailey and Donald & Dalvin DeGrate, all respectively known by their stage names: K-Ci & JoJo, DeVante Swing and Mr. Dalvin.

Despite insistence from the Peniston's management to release " Somebody Else's Guy " as a follow-up, A & M label preferred an alternate composition, " Before I Lay ", which featured the singer ’ s then-beau JoJo Hailey ( of K-Ci & JoJo ) who was supposed to help establish Peniston as an R & B artist.

K-Ci & JoJo are an American R & B duo, consisting of brothers Cedric " K-Ci " Hailey ( born September 2, 1969 ) and Joel " JoJo " Hailey ( born June 10, 1971 ), Natives of Monroe, North Carolina, they were also members of the chart-topping R & B group Jodeci with the DeGrate brothers — Donald ( better known as DeVante Swing ) and Dalvin.

Early in 1996, K-Ci & JoJo teamed up for the song " How Could You " for the movie Bulletproof starring Damon Wayans and Adam Sandler.

By July 1996, K-Ci & JoJo finally had a hit on their hands as guest artists in 2Pac's number-one R & B hit " How Do U Want It ".

A supple, lush ballad far removed from the Jodeci material of the early 1990s, " All My Life " was the number-one song on the Hot 100 for three weeks, a feat that K-Ci & JoJo had never achieved with Jodeci.

K-Ci also contributed background vocals ( alongside Uptown labelmates Terri Robinson and Tabitha Brace ) on some tracks for Ralph Tresvant, produced by Kyle West, and Jasmine Guy's solo debut album, produced by D. J Eddie F of Heavy D and The Boyz.

In late 2006, K-Ci released his debut solo album entitled My Book.

K-Ci & JoJo's second studio album, It's Real was released on June 22, 1999.

The fourth K-Ci & JoJo album, Emotional, was released on November 26, 2002, but did not find commercial success.

K-Ci Hailey of Jodeci recorded a remake of " If You Think You're Lonely Now " by Bobby Womack.

The group's name is a combination of the names from all four members: Jo-Jo, DeGrate, and K-Ci.

K-Ci and Dalvin both decided to tag along, and joined their respective brothers for the trip.

Jodeci's K-Ci Hailey, a notable admirer of Womack's work, covered " If You Think You're Lonely Now " in 1994.

On the A & E's show Child Stars III: Teen Rockers, her mother claimed that JoJo had a borderline genius IQ.

After auditioning in the television show Destination Stardom, JoJo sang Aretha Franklin's 1967 hit " Respect " & Chain of Fools.

Her first album, the platinum-selling JoJo, followed, it peaked at number four on the U. S. Billboard 200 and number ten on the Top R & B / Hip-Hop Albums, selling about 95, 000 copies in its first week and reaching the top forty of the UK Albums Chart.

On December 9, 2008, JoJo was nominated again at the Boston Music Awards and was nominated for Outstanding Pop / R & B Act Of The Year but the singing group Jada has won this award.

In January 2009, JoJo stated on her official MySpace that she has working with producers Chad Hugo, Jim Beanz & Kenna and she currently is working very hard for her new album.

In an Interview with Rap-Up, JoJo said about the album: " I wanted to do something that people would be like, ‘ Wow, this girl has come a long way and she's really taking the reins, I wanted people to get a sense of who I am " and that Timbaland, Jim Beanz, The Messengers, Kenna, Chad Hugo & Pharell Williams work on her new record and in 2010 she's ready to come back and put the finishing touches on the album in January.

Less than two months later JoJo returned to Manilla for the Then & Now Massive Music Festival on May 15, 2010 with other artist like Baby Bash, Frankie J, Diana King, SWV and more.

In December 2010, JoJo made another cameo appearance in Clinton Sparks's Debut music video for " Favourite DJ " Ft Jermaine Dupri & DJ CLASS and at the end in the song " Sucks To Be You " which features LMFAO and JoJo.
