) Dazzler was the first direct sales-only ongoing series from a major publisher ; other Marvel titles, such as Marvel Fanfare and Ka-Zar, soon followed.

In 1970 and 1971, a three-part Angel solo feature was published as a back-up strip in Ka-Zar # 2 and # 3 and Marvel Tales # 30.

It was later revealed in a story arc concerning Ka-Zar that Kraven was trained as a hunter largely by a mysterious man named Gregor, a mercenary who battled Ka-Zar.

The first Ka-Zar, David Rand, was a typical " jungle lord " in the Tarzan vein, also known as Ka-Zar the Great, who first appeared in the pulp magazine Ka-Zar # 1 ( Oct. 1936 ) from Manvis Publishing, one of many magazine companies owned by Martin Goodman.

In the 2000s, the David Rand Ka-Zar was featured in the All New Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe A-Z.

Originally written as a primitive and belligerent savage who spoke in broken English, Ka-Zar later became more articulate and civilized, although he retained a certain degree of distrust toward civilization and was generally wary of outside visitors to the Savage Land.

Spider-Man's memory was restored during the fight, with Ka-Zar subsequently apologizing for the mistake and proclaiming Spider-Man as the most valiant opponent he had ever fought.

Ka-Zar was rescued by the Avengers, but left the Savage Land for the civilized world.

The territory was later reconstructed by the High Evolutionary using Garokk, and Ka-Zar and Shanna returned with their newborn and resumed their previous roles.

Also included was Al Anders ' Western hero the Masked Raider ; the jungle lord Ka-Zar the Great, with Ben Thompson adapting over the first five issues the story " King of Fang and Claw " by Bob Byrd in Goodman's eponymous pulp magazine Ka-Zar # 1 ( Oct. 1936 ); the non-continuing-character story " Jungle Terror ," featuring an adventurer named Ken Masters, written by the quirkily named Tohm Dixon ; " Now I'll Tell One ", five single-panel, black-and-white gag cartoons by Fred Schwab, on the inside front cover ; and a two-page prose story by Ray Gill, " Burning Rubber ", about auto racing.

He reverted back to human form during a battle with the X-Men, and Ka-Zar explained that Lykos was an ally.

Also, Lykos was apparently an inhabitant of the Savage Land, as he knew and was friendly with Ka-Zar.

She was defeated by Ka-Zar and seemingly destroyed.

She captured the X-Men and Ka-Zar, but was thwarted by the X-Men.

She captured Ka-Zar, Shanna, and various X-Men, but was defeated by them.

Fixer then invaded the West Coast Avengers Compound in an attempt to steal Iron Man's armor, but was defeated by Iron Man and Ka-Zar.

In 1974 the color Ka-Zar series left Astonishing Tales and was relaunched in the Ka-Zar, Lord of the Hidden Jungle title.

At one point, Spider-Man teamed up with Ka-Zar to save Gwen Stacy from Kraven the Hunter and Gog at the time when her class and J. Jonah Jameson were visiting the Savage Land.

Upon evading Kraven's other traps, Spider-Man manages to destroy the controls enabling Ka-Zar and Zabu to subdue Kraven and trick him into one of his cages.

Ka-Zar fought and defeated Thanos in one of his many attempts to end life, and later sought the help of investigator Jessica Jones for assistance locating Zabu.

Zabu left the Savage Land in at least one instance, venturing to New York City with Ka-Zar during marital difficulties ; his master was having difficulty controlling an addiction to outside technology.

He and Ka-Zar managed to trick Kraven into one of his cages.

* Toy Biz's 1997 " X-Men: Savage Land " had Ka-Zar and Zabu in one package.

Windsor-Smith also provided the art for a number of other Marvel Comics titles, including the Ka-Zar stories in Astonishing Tales # 3 -# 5 ( December 1970-April 1971 ) and # 10 ( February 1972 ), three further issues of The Avengers (# 98-100, April – June 1972 )-about which he would later remember the nightmare of drawing " all those bloody characters that I didn't give tuppence about ", Iron Man # 42 ( June 1972 ), and Marvel Premiere # 3-4 ( July – September 1972 ), which featured Doctor Strange, both of which were apparently re-scripted by Stan Lee after being drawn to Lee ’ s original scripts.

He has had four self-titled series ( 1970 – 1971 ; three issues, mostly reprints ), 1974-1977 ( 20 issues ) by Mike Friedrich, 1981-1984 ( Ka-Zar the Savage, 34 issues ) by Bruce Jones and Mike Carlin, and 1997-1998 ( 20 issues ) written by Mark Waid.

Siegel's later work would appear in Marvel Comics, where under the pseudonym " Joe Carter " he scripted the " Human Torch " feature in Strange Tales # 112-113 ( Sept .- Oct. 1963 ), introducing the teenaged Torch's high school girlfriend, Doris Evans ; and, under his own name, a backup feature starring the X-Men member Angel, which ran in Marvel Tales and Ka-Zar.

Ka-Zar has teamed up with several of Marvel heroes.

It is briefly noted in Marvel Zombies that a zombified Quicksilver managed to spread the virus to the Savage Land, infecting Ka-Zar and Zabu.

At Marvel in the 1980s, he edited the Spider-Man titles as well as Marvel Team-Up and Ka-Zar.

During his tenure, Harras oversaw critically acclaimed runs on titles such as Captain America, Daredevil, Ka-Zar and Deadpool.

Considered to be " god-like " by the natives, David Rand ended up named Ka-Zar ( native for " Brother of Zar ").

He mentions that Barbara learned of Ka-Zar ’ s whereabouts from the butler at the Plunder Estate, clearly indicating that Barbara is meant to be the same character as the brunette from the previous two issues.

Framing the flashback is a sequence of newer material by writer Roy Thomas and artist John Buscema in which Barbara ( now revealed to be " Dr. Barbara Morse " and thus the character from the Wein / Adams Man-Thing story ) and Paul ( now " Dr. Paul Allen ") accompany Ka-Zar back to the United States and explain that they sought him out so that he could help them deal with the problems surrounding the appearance of the Man-Thing in Florida.

Zabu jumped on Peter / Spider-Man and seemed to be hugging him ; Ka-Zar said this was a sign that he was part of Zabu's family, and that he had not seen Zabu do this for quite some time.

He helped Shanna and Ka-Zar battle the Skrulls, killing the Skrull pretending to be Jessica Jones.

The aboriginal inhabitants were wiped out and only a small tribe of survivors including Ka-Zar and Shanna remain.

IGN listed Ka-Zar as the 84th greatest comic book hero of all time describing the character as Marvel's equivalent of Tarzan ; IGN also compared Ka-Zar as the protector of his land with Namor being protector of the underwater king, with the only difference being is that Ka-Zar isn't a total jerk and having a better loin cloth.
