Acheson attended Groton School and Yale College ( 1912 – 1915 ), where he joined Scroll and Key Society, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and was a brother of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity ( Phi chapter ).

After graduating from Princeton University ( Phi Beta Kappa, 1908 ), where he competed on the American Whig-Cliosophic Society debate team, and graduating from The George Washington University Law School, he joined the New York City law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell, where he specialized in international law.

There are eight fraternities ( Alpha Kappa Lambda, Delta Sigma Phi, Delta Upsilon, Kappa Sigma, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi, Sigma Lambda Beta, and Tau Kappa Epsilon ), and four sororities ( Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Pi Sigma, Alpha Xi Delta, and Alpha Gamma Delta ) on campus.

Over the past two years, the community added four fraternities ( Tau Kappa Epsilon, Sigma Chi, Delta Sigma Phi ( ΔΣΦ ), and Delta Upsilon ) and one sorority ( Alpha Gamma Delta ).

The first chapter established after the Phi Beta Kappa became an " open " society was that at Trinity College ( Connecticut ), in 1845.

Two of the three fraternities are for male Pomona students only ( Kappa Delta and Sigma Tau ), while membership in the third ( Nu Alpha Phi ) is open to students of any gender ..

At age 17, he entered Harvard University where he studied under George Santayana, William James, and Graham Wallas, concentrating upon philosophy and languages ( he spoke German and French ), and earned his degree in three years, graduating as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa society.

Phi Theta Kappa, also ΦΘΚ or sometimes PTK ( see usage note ), is the international honor society of two-year colleges and academic programs, particularly community colleges and junior colleges.

This is due largely to perceived disrespect for the institution by the shortening of the name, and also an attempt to prevent confusion with the Greek letters Rho Tau Kappa, or ρτκ, which look like the Latin letters for P, T, and K that do not truly correspond to the proper Greek letters Φ ( Ph ), Θ ( Th ) and Κ ( K ).
