An urban legend claims this was the origin of the band's name, but according to band member Jorma Kaukonen, the name was invented by his friend Steve Talbot as a parody of blues names such as Blind Lemon Jefferson.

In October 1965, after the other members decided that Bob Harvey's bass playing was not up to par, he was replaced by guitarist-bassist Jack Casady, an old friend of Kaukonen from Washington D. C. Casady played his first gig with the Airplane at a college concert in Berkeley, California, two weeks after he arrived in San Francisco.

During late 1969 Casady and Kaukonen recorded an all-acoustic blues album, which was released in the spring of 1970.

The accident happened while she was drag racing with Jorma Kaukonen ; both were driving at over 100 miles per hour, and Kaukonen claims that he " saved her life " by pulling her from the car.

In 1996, Jefferson Airplane was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with Balin, Casady, Dryden, Kantner & Kaukonen attending & performing at the ceremony.

By 1973, with Kaukonen and Casady now devoting their full attention to Hot Tuna, the musicians on Baron von Tollbooth & the Chrome Nun formed the core of a new lineup that was formally reborn as " Jefferson Starship " in 1974.

He also continued with occasional guest appearances with Hot Tuna, and was on stage at the Fillmore Auditorium in 1988 when Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen of Hot Tuna were reunited with Paul Kantner and Grace Slick for the first time since Jefferson Airplane disbanded.

Kaukonen was a founding member of the popular psychedelic San Francisco-based band Jefferson Airplane, which scored two Top 10 radio hits in 1967 with " Somebody to Love " and " White Rabbit.

Invited to attend a Jefferson Airplane rehearsal by founding member Paul Kantner, Kaukonen found his imagination excited by the arsenal of effects available to electric guitar and later said, " I was sucked in by technology.

At a 1988 Hot Tuna performance at the Fillmore Auditorium, Kaukonen surprised fellow Airplane alumnus Paul Kantner, who was sitting in, with a surprise appearance by his estranged lover Grace Slick ; the success of this performance helped to pave the way for a Jefferson Airplane reunion tour and record in 1989.

Kippel was instrumental in reuniting Kaukonen and Casady in 1985 for a Hot Tuna theater tour.

His 2002 album Blue Country Heart, also released as a 5. 1 single layer SACD, was widely acclaimed by critics as one of the definitive examples of American " Depression Era " music and features Kaukonen backed by an all-star Nashville bluegrass band.

" It was not until 2004 that Kaukonen became aware that Spencer was the nephew of Charlie Chaplin.

It was to be the last all-new LP for two years ; Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen would now devote more of their energy to their embryonic blues group " Hot Tuna ", while Paul Kantner and Grace Slick celebrated the birth of their daughter China in 1971.

He became the bass player for Jefferson Airplane when lead guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, a high school friend and former Triumphs rhythm guitarist, invited him to join in late September 1965.

Jefferson Airplane ended 1970 with their traditional Thanksgiving Day engagement at the Fillmore East ( the final performance of the short-lived Kantner / Balin / Slick / Kaukonen / Casady / Creach / Covington line-up ) and the release of their first compilation album, The Worst of Jefferson Airplane, which continued their unbroken run of chart success, reaching No. 12 on the Billboard album chart.

Though still a nominal member of the band, Joey Covington had immersed himself in the production of his own album with Peter Kaukonen and Black Kangaroo on Grunt ; consequently, John Barbata ( formerly of The Turtles and CSNY ) played on most of the album and continued on for the promotional tour that followed.

Sears had worked on three of Rod Stewart's early British recordings, and had to go back to England to play on Smiler, Stewart's last album made in London, so Jorma Kaukonen's brother Peter Kaukonen first played with the band early in 1974 before Sears returned to the States and replaced him in Jefferson Starship in June 1974.

Jorma Ludwik Kaukonen, Jr. ( born December 23, 1940 ) is an American blues, folk, and rock guitarist, best known for his work with Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna.

Beginning with their fifth album, America's Choice ( 1974 ), the addition of drummer Bob Steeler encouraged a rise in volume and a change of band personality — a rampaging, Cream-like rock with often quasi-mystical lyrics by Kaukonen.

In 1974, Kaukonen recorded the first and most successful of several solo albums, Quah, together with Tom Hobson.

Kaukonen toured vigorously throughout the 1970s in both the United States and Europe, but with Hot Tuna's break up in 1978, the first phase of the band's career ended.

Kaukonen, experimenting with a new image, not only cut his hair but dyed it purple then bright orange, and had extensive tattoos adorn his body, back and arms.

Casady left to form the new wave band SVT, while Kaukonen released his second solo album, Jorma, a mix of electric guitar and acoustic fingerstyle in 1979.

As a self-described blues purist, Kaukonen never had any ambition to play in a rock band.

Original compositions by Kaukonen on the 1971 Jefferson Airplane album, Bark are an instrumental, " Wild Turkey ," " Feel So Good ," and the acoustic autobiographical " Third Week in the Chelsea ," detailing his feelings about the disintegration of the band.

The benefit re-kindled Spencer's friendship with Jefferson Airplane band member Jorma Kaukonen, who remembered him fondly for the way he said, " Aww, MAN !!

Since 2009 Warner has also been touring with Jefferson Airplane founding members, and Rock and Roll Hall of Famers bassist Jack Casady and guitarist Jorma Kaukonen in the enduring American blues-rock band Hot Tuna.

When not performing with his own band, Falzarano can be seen with Hot Tuna, the Jorma Kaukonen Trio, and the New Riders of the Purple Sage.

Relix records existed for 20 years and released over 120 records including ones many magazine favorites, such as Jorma Kaukonen, Hot Tuna, Free Grass Union, the New Riders of the Purple Sage, Wavy Gravy, Commander Cody and many more.

Although he had remained part of the band's live performances after the band's creative direction shifted from the brooding love songs that he specialized in, an emerging drinking problem, compounded by the evolution of the polarized Kantner / Slick and Kaukonen / Casady cliques, had finally left him the odd man out.

Even after the departure of Balin, major creative and personal divisions persisted between Slick and Kantner on the one side and Kaukonen and Casady on the other.

Kaukonen departed Washington for studies at Antioch College where friend Ian Buchanan taught him fingerstyle guitar playing.

However, Kantner and Casady continued to perform onstage together during Hot Tuna concerts in late 1987 and early 1988, and the three did re-unite with Grace Slick and Jorma Kaukonen for a Jefferson Airplane reunion album and a reunion tour in 1989, along with Tim Gorman playing keyboards for the tour.

Kaukonen learned to play guitar as a teenager in Washington, D. C., but before moving to the D. C. area, Jorma and family lived in the Philippines and other locales as he followed his father's career from assignment to assignment before returning to the place of his birth.

With his wife Vanessa, Kaukonen currently owns and operates the Fur Peace Ranch, a music and guitar camp in the hills of southeast Ohio, north of Pomeroy ; complete with a 32 track studio.
