Magdalena recently held its first Kawayan Festival to mark the town's 185th Foundation Day.

Kawayan Festival-The Municipality of Alegria, Cebu launched the Kawayan Festival last December 2, 2006 in time for the Annual Town Fiesta.

Local contingents paraded the streets ( mardi gras ), and locally produced Kawayan ( local bamboo ) products were on display.

The town was covered with bamboo thickets called Kawayan in the local dialect hence, the name Cauayan.

Cauayan got its name from the word Kawayan meaning bulo in the dialect of ilocano, the early settlers of this place.

Bagacay Kawayan, Bagacay Katipuhan and Bagacay Saong, after “ bagakay ” or bamboo abundant in the area and utilized by the residents to make various handicrafts.

“ Kawayan ” is the most common local term for bamboo.

In Bagacay Kawayan, during the Spanish times, a bamboo thicket grew beside a small pool of mud to where the early inhabitants brought their carabaos to wallow.

In 1948, the barangays of Ungale, Tuo, and Inasuyan were transferred to Kawayan, Biliran.

Kawayan is a 5th class municipality in the province of Biliran, Philippines.

Kawayan is politically subdivided into 20 barangays.

Barangay San Teodoro was created in 1953 from the sitio of Pook ng Buhangin from Barrio Ilat and the sitio of Cupang from Barrio Gelerang Kawayan.

In 1957, the barrios of Mataas na Kahoy, Balangkare Norte, Balangkare Sur, Sapang Kawayan, Magasawang Sampaloc, Talabutab Norte, Talabutab Sur, Platero, Belen, Pecaleon, Piñahan, Kabulihan, Pasong-Hari, Balaring, Pulong Singkamas, Panaksak, Bravo, Sapang Bato, Burol, Miller, Tila Patio, Pula, Carinay, and Acacia, in the City of Cabanatuan separated from the said city and constituted into a separate and independent municipality known as General Mamerto Natividad.

Since conference and of the Food and Agriculture Organization's publication World Festival of Trees, and a resolution of the United Nations in 1954: " The Conference, recognising the need of arousing mass consciousness of the aesthetic, physical and economic value of trees, recommends a World Festival of Trees to be celebrated annually in each member country on a date suited to local conditions "; it has been adopted by the Netherlands.

The Festival of the Forks has been held annually since 1967 to celebrate Albion's ethnic heritage.
