Down formed in 1991 with vocalist / songwriter Phil Anselmo of Pantera, guitarist Pepper Keenan of Corrosion of Conformity, second guitarist Kirk Windstein and bassist Todd Strange of Crowbar, and drummer Jimmy Bower of Eyehategod.

In 1993, Agell and Swisher left the band and formed the band Leadfoot, Dean returned and Keenan took over lead vocals.

The Go Set are a five-piece punk rock band formed in 2002 and is built around founding member and main songwriter Justin Keenan.

In 2005, the remaining members reunited for a benefit concert for victims of the December 26, 2004 tsunami, with several vocalists filling in for Staley, including Patrick Lachman from Damageplan, Phil Anselmo of Pantera and Down fame, Wes Scantlin from Puddle of Mudd, Maynard James Keenan from Tool ( a friend of Staley's ), and Ann Wilson from Heart, who had previously worked with Alice in Chains when she sang on the Sap EP ( performing backing vocals on the songs " Brother " and " Am I Inside ").

After a hiatus in 2006, Corrosion of Conformity returned in 2010, without Keenan who is currently in Down ( although it has been disputed whether Keenan has left the band ).

Members of COC have also participated in collaborations: Keenan plays guitar with the metal supergroup Down, and Dean contributed vocals to a track titled " Access Babylon " on Dave Grohl's Probot project.
