The Dictum of Kenilworth, issued 31 October 1266, was a pronouncement designed to reconcile the rebels of the Barons ' War with the royal government of England.

The Dictum of Kenilworth was later incorporated into the Statute of Marlborough.

Part of the rebellious forces held out, however, and their stronghold was the virtually impregnable Kenilworth Castle.

In August, the king summoned a parliament at Kenilworth, where the siege was ongoing.

The result, known as the Dictum of Kenilworth, was made public on 31 October 1266.

The same was the case for Henry de Hastings, who was the commander of Kenilworth Castle.

The libretto of this opera by Giovanni Schmidt was in many of its incidents an anticipation of those presented to the world a few years later in Sir Walter Scott's Kenilworth.

The castle was the subject of the six-month long Siege of Kenilworth in 1266, believed to be the longest siege in English history, and formed a base for Lancastrian operations in the War of the Roses.

Kenilworth was partly destroyed by Parliamentary forces in 1649 to prevent it being used as a military stronghold.

Kenilworth Castle was founded in the early 1120s by Geoffrey de Clinton, Lord Chamberlain to Henry I.

The conflict spread across England and Kenilworth was garrisoned by Henry II's forces ; Geoffrey II de Clinton died in this period and the castle was taken fully into royal possession, a sign of its military importance.

The result was to turn Kenilworth into one of the largest English castles of the time, with one of the largest artificial lake defences in England.

Edward was taken back to Kenilworth, where chroniclers considered he was held in unduly harsh conditions.

The Siege of Kenilworth Castle in 1266 was " probably the longest in English history " according to historian Norman Pounds, and at the time was also the largest siege to have occurred in England in terms of the number of soldiers involved.

Henry, reoccupying most of the Lancaster lands, was made constable of Kenilworth and Edward was transported there in late 1326 ; Henry's legal title to the castle was finally confirmed the following year.

Kenilworth was chosen for this purpose by Isabella probably both because it was a major fortification, and also because of the symbolism of its former owners ' links to popular ideals of freedom and good government.

A deputation of leading barons led by Bishop Orleton was then sent to Kenilworth to first persuade Edward to resign and, when that failed, to inform him that he had been deposed as king.

Kenilworth has also played an important historical role.

Henry V also used Kenilworth extensively, but preferred to stay in the Pleasance, the mock castle he had built on the other side of the Great Mere.

Kenilworth remained a ruin during the 18th and 19th centuries, still used as a farm but increasingly also popular as a tourist attraction.

Siege towers also became more elaborate during the medieval period ; at the Siege of Kenilworth Castle in 1266, for example, 200 archers and 11 catapults operated from a single tower.

Kenilworth is also home to a Roman Catholic elementary school at St. Theresa ’ s.

It is also the home of Kenilworth Swimming Club and the highly successful Kenilworth Masters Swimming Club.

During the 1920s all the models were named after towns, not only near the factory such as Canley and Kenilworth but also further afield – Teignmouth, Falmouth, and Exmouth.

By far the best known species is Cymbalaria muralis ( also called Ivy-leaved toadflax, and Kenilworth Ivy ), native to southwest Europe.

At various times the constituency's boundaries have also taken in the towns of Kenilworth, Stratford-upon-Avon, and Studley.

Renovation of Kenilworth Road was neglected for the next two decades – financial difficulties and the club's ambitions to build a new ground meant that regeneration was unaffordable, and would also prove unnecessary should relocation occur.

The Main Stand's enclosure received seats, and work also began on converting the Kenilworth Stand, which had a roof added at this time.

Kenilworth Road also hosts a number of local tournaments and events, including an annual youth competition organised by London Luton Airport.

Santley also appeared there in Messiah and Arthur Sullivan's The Masque at Kenilworth.

The group also played at all-night parties in Peggy's large house in Kenilworth Square in Rathgar and in John Molloy's flat in Ely Place, just around the corner from O ' Donoghue's.

District of Columbia Route 295 ( DC 295 ), also known as the Anacostia Freeway south of East Capitol Street or Kenilworth Avenue north of East Capitol Street, is a freeway in the District of Columbia, and currently the only numbered route in the District that is not an Interstate Highway or U. S. Highway.

He was made Baron Wotton Basset and Viscount Hyde, of Kenilworth in the County of Warwick, at the same time, also in the Peerage of England.

District transportation officials also said that ramps and overpasses for the Kenilworth Avenue exits were almost complete by this time as well, but the railroad track underpass ( being built by S. Wikstrom Co .) was only 46 percent complete and not due for final work until November 1955.

Dorridge is part of the Meriden constituency, MP Caroline Spelman who also lives nearby, though is due to be split from Meriden under the current boundary review, forming a separate constituency of Dorridge and Kenilworth with the nearby castle town of Kenilworth.

Kenilworth also has a delightful ' Living History ' Museum with a theatrette which shows a history of the district to visitors, together with displays covering many areas of history past.

Kenilworth spawned " numerous stage adaptations and burlesques, at least eleven operas, popular redactions, and even a scene in a set of dioramas for home display ", including Sir Arthur Sullivan's 1865 cantata The Masque at Kenilworth.

Released in early 1265, Edward then defeated Montfort at the Battle of Evesham ; the surviving rebels under the leadership of Henry de Hastings, Montfort's constable at Kenilworth, regrouped at the castle the following spring.

Edward and his wife, Isabella of France, spent Christmas 1323 at Kenilworth, amidst major celebrations.

As the months went by, however, it became clear that Kenilworth was proving a less than ideal location to imprison Edward.

On 20 January 1327, Edward II was informed at Kenilworth Castle of the charges brought against him: The King was guilty of incompetence ; allowing others to govern him to the detriment of the people and Church ; not listening to good advice and pursuing occupations unbecoming to a monarch ; having lost Scotland and lands in Gascony and Ireland through failure of effective governance ; damaging the Church, and imprisoning its representatives ; allowing nobles to be killed, disinherited, imprisoned and exiled ; failing to ensure fair justice, instead governing for profit and allowing others to do likewise ; and of fleeing in the company of a notorious enemy of the realm, leaving it without government, and thereby losing the faith and trust of his people.

The minimally agreed version of events is that Isabella and Mortimer had Edward moved from Kenilworth Castle in the Midlands to the safer location of Berkeley Castle in the Welsh borders, where he was put into the custody of Lord Thomas Berkeley.

Prince Edward attacked the Montfort forces at Kenilworth, capturing more of Montfort's allies.

In 1327 the bishop joined Queen Isabella's partisans ; he drew up the six articles against Edward II, and was one of those who visited the captive king at Kenilworth to urge him to abdicate in favour of his son.

In December 1264 he was given a safe conduct to visit the king, and then and in May 1265 he spoke with Edward, helping organise his escape from Kenilworth Castle on 28 May.
