A member of NYMPC had seen Chaplin perform ( accounts of whom and where vary ) and felt that he would make a good replacement for Fred Mace, outgoing star of their Keystone Studios.

His new production company became an autonomous production unit partner in Triangle Film Corporation along with Thomas Ince and Keystone Studios ' Mack Sennett ; the Triangle Film Corporation was headed by Griffith's partner Harry Aitken, who was released from the Mutual Film Corporation, and his brother Roy.

With financial backing from Adam Kessel and Charles O. Bauman of the New York Motion Picture Company, in 1912 Sennett founded Keystone Studios in Edendale, California, ( which is now a part of Echo Park ).

In 1915 Keystone Studios became an autonomous production unit of the ambitious Triangle Film Corporation, as Sennett joined forces with movie bigwigs D. W. Griffith and Thomas Ince.

Peter Lovesey's 1983 novel Keystone is a whodunnit set in the Keystone Studios and involving ( among others ), Mack Sennett, Mabel Normand, Roscoe Arbuckle and the Keystone Cops.

Canadian born director Mack Sennett hired him to both direct and act in a large number of films at his Keystone Studios.

Keystone Studios was an early movie studio founded in Edendale, California in 1912 as the Keystone Pictures Studio by Mack Sennett with backing from Adam Kessel and Charles O. Bauman, owners of the New York Motion Picture Company.

He used his connection to the two men to acquire contracts for his Keystone Bridge Company and the rails produced by his ironworks.

Carnegie's empire grew to include the J. Edgar Thomson Steel Works, ( named for John Edgar Thomson, Carnegie's former boss and president of the Pennsylvania Railroad ), Pittsburgh Bessemer Steel Works, the Lucy Furnaces, the Union Iron Mills, the Union Mill ( Wilson, Walker & County ), the Keystone Bridge Works, the Hartman Steel Works, the Frick Coke Company, and the Scotia ore mines.

Carnegie, through Keystone, supplied the steel for and owned shares in the landmark Eads Bridge project across the Mississippi River at St. Louis, Missouri ( completed 1874 ).

Chaplin proceeded to direct every short film in which he appeared for Keystone, approximately one per week, which he remembered as the most exciting time of his career.

In June, Keystone issued adverts in Britain with the words: " Are you prepared for the Chaplin boom?

Sennett left in 1912 to set up the Keystone company, where he could give his enthusiasm for the slapstick comedy style derived from the earlier Pathé comedies like le Cheval emballé ( The Runaway Horse ) full rein.

The movies were produced by Mack Sennett for his Keystone Film Company between 1912 and 1917.

The Keystone Cops serve as supporting players for Marie Dressler, Mabel Normand, and Chaplin in the first full-length Sennett comedy feature, Tillie's Punctured Romance ( 1914 ), as well as in Mabel's New Hero ( 1913 ) with Normand and Arbuckle, Making a Living ( 1914 ) with Chaplin in his first screen appearance ( pre-Tramp ), In the Clutches of the Gang ( 1914 ) with Normand, Arbuckle, and Al St. John, and Wished on Mabel ( 1915 ) with Arbuckle and Normand, among others.

In 1935, director Ralph Staub staged a revival of the Sennett gang for his Warner Brothers short subject Keystone Hotel, featuring a re-creation of the Kops clutching at their hats, leaping in the air in surprise, running energetically in any direction, and taking extreme pratfalls.

The Staub version of the Keystone Cops became a template for later re-creations.

The phrase " Keystone cops defending " has become a favorite catchphrase for describing a situation in an English soccer match where a defensive error or a series of defensive errors leads to a goal.

In 1983, a video game called Keystone Kapers was released for the Atari 2600, 5200, and later Colecovision.

Sennett was profiled in the television series This is Your Life in 1954, and made a cameo appearance ( for $ 1, 000 ) in Abbott and Costello Meet the Keystone Kops ( 1955 ).
