The county area was divided between four new districts within the two-tier Strathclyde region: Cumnock and Doon Valley, Cunninghame, Kilmarnock and Loudoun and Kyle and Carrick.

On 23 January 2009, former player of, among others, Dundee, Dunfermline Athletic and Kilmarnock, Ross Jack was named as the club's new manager, signing a three-and-a-half-year-contract.

Another innovative new service is the X16 connecting Ayr with Hamilton and East Kilbride via Kilmarnock and Prestwick Airport.

Hairmyres is an area of East Kilbride to the west side of the new town, sited on the main road to Eaglesham and Kilmarnock, and is located 2. 2 miles from the Glasgow City Council boundary at the Carmunnock Bypass and 9 miles south from Glasgow City Centre.

In 1918 the burgh of Kilmarnock was merged into the then new Kilmarnock county constituency, which included areas previously within North Ayrshire and South Ayrshire.

The new Kilmarnock constituency consisted of " The county district of Kilmarnock, inclusive of all burghs situated therein except in so far as included in the Ayr District of Burghs.
