Influenced by the sounds and style of no wave and noise rock bands, Love convinced Sonic Youth bassist Kim Gordon to produce Hole's first studio album.

During this time, he was romantically involved with Kim Gordon, who would later go on to form Sonic Youth.

In 1991, the band signed onto Caroline Records to release their debut album, and Love sought Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth to produce the record.
