For the junction for the Shenandoah Valley Railroad and the Norfolk & Western, Kimball and his board of directors selected a small Virginia village called Big Lick, on the Roanoke River.

Although the railroad primarily transported agricultural products in when it was formed from the A, M & O in 1881, Kimball, who had a strong interest in geology, led the railroad's efforts to open the Pocahontas coalfields in western Virginia and southern West Virginia.

The popular song " Just as the Storm Passed O ' er " was based on the event, and the Kimball Piano Company exploited the incident for its advertising, when one of their instruments was carried a long distance by the tornado but still found in working condition.

The first seam was discovered in nearby Pocahontas, Virginia in the backyard of Jordan Nelson which was, in the words of President Frederick Kimball of the Norfolk and Western Company, the " most spectacular find on the continent and indeed perhaps of the entire planet.

Consolidated into the New River Railroad Company, with Kimball as President, these lines became the basis for Norfolk and Western's New River Division, which was soon built from New Kanawha ( near East Radford ) up the west bank of the New River through Pulaski County and into Giles County to the mouth of the East River near Glen Lyn, Virginia.

The instrument features eighty-eight ranks of string pipes built by the W. W. Kimball Company of Chicago.

It is the successor to W. W. Kimball and Company, the world's largest piano and organ manufacturer at certain times in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Kimball International started as a piano dealership in Chicago in 1857 as W. W. Kimball and Company, founded by William Wallace Kimball ( 1828 – 1904 ).

In 1864, Kimball moved from its earliest location in the corner of a jewelry store to sales rooms in the Crosby Opera House where Kimball sold pianos made by East Coast piano makers Chickering and Sons, the J & C Fischer Piano Company, Hallet & Davis, F. C.

In 1959, Jasper, Inc., purchased the W. W. Kimball Company as a wholly owned subsidiary.

Company leaders realized that the Kimball brand had far greater popular recognition than the Jasper brand, and in 1974, Jasper changed its name to Kimball International, going public in September 1976 with the initial public offering of 500, 000 shares of common stock.

On March 16, 1869, Kimball along with Edward N. Kimball, John Rice, John C. Peck, and Jame A. Burns incorporated the Atlanta Canal and Water Company.

The property was formerly the home of the Kimball Tobacco Co. and other retail buildings.
