Star Trek is an American science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry that follows the adventures of the starship and its crew, led by Captain James T. Kirk ( William Shatner ), first officer Spock ( Leonard Nimoy ), and chief medical officer Dr. Leonard McCoy ( DeForest Kelley ), in the 23rd century.

In Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Worf's grandfather Colonel Worf ( also portrayed by Michael Dorn ) appears in a role as the legal advocate of Captain James T. Kirk and Dr. Leonard McCoy after they are accused of killing Chancellor Gorkon of the Klingon High Council.

Unlike his TNG co-stars, this was Michael Dorn's second Star Trek film, having appeared on Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, portraying his TNG character's grandfather, Colonel Worf, who defended Kirk and McCoy on their trial.

One element from Yesteryear that has become canon by depiction within Star Trek: The Original Series is the Vulcan city of ShiKahr, depicted in a background scene wherein Kirk, Spock and McCoy walk across a natural stone bridge ( first depicted in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock ) in the remastered " Amok Time ".

In 2266, McCoy was posted as chief medical officer of the USS Enterprise under Captain James T. Kirk who calls him " Bones ".

McCoy and Kirk are good friends, even " brotherly ".

Kirk orders McCoy's commission reactivated in Star Trek: The Motion Picture ( 1979 ); a resentful McCoy complains of being " drafted ".

In Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country ( 1991 ), McCoy and Kirk escape from a Klingon prison world, and the Enterprise crew stops a plot to prevent peace between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire.

In the 2009 Star Trek film, which takes place in an " alternate, parallel " reality, McCoy and Kirk become friends at Starfleet Academy, which McCoy joins after a divorce that he says " left nothing but bones.

McCoy later helps get Kirk posted aboard the USS Enterprise.

" Exquisite chemistry " among Kelley, William Shatner, and Leonard Nimoy manifested itself in their performances as McCoy, Captain James T. Kirk and science officer Spock, respectively.

For the 2009 reboot film Star Trek, writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman saw McCoy as an " arbiter " in Kirk and Spock's relationship.

" They chose to reveal McCoy befriended Kirk first, explaining the " bias " in their friendship and why he would often be a " little dismissive " of Spock.

McCoy is someone to whom Kirk unburdens himself and is a foil to Spock.

Urban said McCoy has a " sense of irascibility with real passion for life and doing the right thing ", and that " Spock's logic and McCoy's moral standing gave Kirk the benefit of having three brains instead of just one.

In a parody sketch titled " The Restaurant Enterprise ", on an episode of Saturday Night Live, Kirk ( guest host William Shatner ) directs McCoy ( Phil Hartman ) to help a man who's choking.

In " The Paradise Syndrome "," the Enterprise attempts to save a pre-industrial planet by moving an asteroid that was on a collision course with it ; when McCoy asks Kirk if he should warn the people, Kirk and Spock only point out the people would not understand the warning, and neither makes any reference to the Prime Directive.

Admiral Matthew Dougherty's reasons for violation of the Prime Directive in Star Trek: Insurrection in Picard's time echoes the reasons Kirk gives McCoy in " Private Little War " but Picard considers them invalid.

Meyer's The Wrath of Khan script focuses on Kirk's age, with McCoy giving Kirk a pair of glasses as a birthday present.

The series ' creators feel that " Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the rest should be treated as ' classic ' characters like Willy Loman from Death of a Salesman, Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings or even Hamlet, Othello or Romeo.

In a later TOS episode " Requiem for Methuselah ", Spock specifically requests a Terran brandy after Dr. McCoy, while serving himself and Captain Kirk, observes that he had no expectation that Spock would be joining them in a drink for fear that the alcohol would affect his logic faculties.

Along with Captain James T. Kirk and Dr. Leonard " Bones " McCoy, he is one of the three central characters in the original Star Trek series and its films.

Star Trek depicts a " troika " of Spock, Kirk, and Doctor Leonard McCoy ( DeForest Kelley ); while McCoy often acts as Kirk's conscience, Spock offers the captain an emotionally detached, logical perspective.

In Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Dr. Gillian Taylor jumps into Kirk's transporter beam during dematerialization, and rematerializes without any apparent ill effects, except for a tongue-lashing from Admiral Kirk.

Kirk and Spock discover a pair of whales —" George " and " Gracie "— in the care of Dr. Gillian Taylor at the Cetacean Institute in Sausalito, a museum dedicated to the study of whales, and learn they will soon be released into the wild.

Kirk attempts to learn the tracking codes for the whales from Taylor, but she refuses to cooperate.

Other scenes were filmed in the city but used sets rather than real locations, such as an Italian restaurant where Taylor and Kirk eat.

Produced by Peter Vincent Douglas and directed by Don Taylor, the film stars Kirk Douglas, Martin Sheen, James Farentino, Katharine Ross and Charles Durning.
