In the late 1970s, fiction that included a sexual relationship between two of the male characters of the media source ( first Kirk / Spock, then later Starsky / Hutch, Napoleon / Illya, and many others ) started to appear in zines.

" In the " The Apple " Spock points out that Starfleet Command may not agree with his choice to interfere with the computer controlled culture to which Kirk replies " I'll take my chances.

In " The Paradise Syndrome "," the Enterprise attempts to save a pre-industrial planet by moving an asteroid that was on a collision course with it ; when McCoy asks Kirk if he should warn the people, Kirk and Spock only point out the people would not understand the warning, and neither makes any reference to the Prime Directive.

At the beginning of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Kirk takes command of the Enterprise from Captain Spock to pursue his enemy from " Space Seed ", Khan Noonien Singh.

In Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Kirk leads his surviving officers in a successful mission to rescue Spock from a planet on which he is reborn.

The 2009 film Star Trek introduces an alternate timeline that reveals different origins for Kirk, the formation of his association with Spock, and how they came to serve together on the Enterprise.
