The poet Herman Wildenvey, the writer Jonas Lie as well as the painters Hans Gude and Christian Krohg all lived in Stavern at some point in their lives.

Christian Krohg ( August 13, 1852 – October 16, 1925 ), was a Norwegian naturalist painter, illustrator, author and journalist.

Krohg was the son of lawyer and statesman Georg Anton Krohg ( 1817 – 73 ) and the grandson of Christian Krohg ( 1777 – 1828 ) who was a government minister.

Another work of art made for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, the painting Leiv Eiriksson oppdager Amerika by Christian Krohg, was in the possession of a Leif Erikson Memorial Association in Chicago before being given back to the National Gallery of Norway in 1900.

Krohg was the founding editor of the Bohemian journal, Impressionisten, in 1886.

He was married to artist Oda Krohg and was the father of muralist Per Lasson Krohg.

He was severely criticized by fellow artists especially by Christian Krohg, who was one of the leading figures in the transition from romanticism to naturalism which characterized Norwegian art in this period.

Groven's art is influenced by painters such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Käthe Kollwitz, as well as Norwegian artists such as Adolph Tidemand, Hans Gude, J. C. Dahl, Christian Krohg and the contemporary caricaturist Finn Graff.
