In the character's first appearance, originally only intended as a one-off, Kryten was played by actor David Ross but the popularity of the character meant that Kryten was introduced as a regular in Series III.
The intention was to bring Ross back to play the role, but he was not available at the time and the position was filled by Northampton-born actor Robert Llewellyn, whose performances as Kryten in series III-VIII resulted in even greater popularity of the character.

This was however revealed by Kristine Kochanski to be merely a piece of software which ensured Kryten was thorough in his cleaning of lavatories.

In 1997 Adventure Soft released The Feeble Files, with the lead character being voiced by Robert Llewellyn who played Kryten also in Red Dwarf.
However, following the success of the first appearance by the Kryten character, Naylor convinced Grant to bring him back.
Sometime after this, Kryten was picked up by the crew of the Nova 5 and he became the personal servant of three female crew members of this vessel.
Kryten was eventually rescued by the crew of Red Dwarf where he is now reduced to serving the slobbish Dave Lister ( to some extent at least ), the only surviving human crew member on that vessel.
Kryten ( as portrayed by David Ross ) was introduced in the first episode of the second series, in which he was only supposed to be a guest star.
In the episode DNA, Kryten is briefly transformed into a human being ( played by Llewellyn, minus his usual make-up ) using the organic material used in his construction as a template.
In the seventh series, Kryten discovered that he has a " brother " named Able as they both had the " same motherboard " ( also played by Robert Llewellyn, who co-wrote the episode ), named in reference to the Biblical Cain and Abel.
In the series 5 episode " Back to Reality, Kryten almost commits suicide when under the belief that he took the life of a human ( he later found out it was just an illusion created by the despair squid ).
In this series, Kryten was owned by the ship's Captain prior to the disaster that wiped out the crew, and passed the three million years by reading an EXIT sign.
In Red Dwarf: Back to Earth, Lister believes Kochanski to be dead, but a conversation between Lister and two children in a hallucination caused by a despair squid reveals that her death is a cover story and that in truth she dumped Lister by fleeing Red Dwarf in a Blue Midget shuttle and that Kryten hid the truth by claiming she was sucked out of an airlock.

Kryten has also extended his emotional range, which has led to him deactivating his shutdown disk ( DivaDroid believes in planned obsolescence ), although the crew were then forced into a showdown with his would-be replacement.

In the episode, " The Last Day ", Kryten states that Lister is a pantheist, believing God to be in all things ; however, in the later episode " Back to Reality " he is described as the " ultimate atheist ".
Lister eventually acknowledges his inability to play the guitar to at least some degree ; in " Nanarchy " he comments, after playing his guitar with assistance from Kryten due to the loss of an arm, " at least now I'm only half-crap.
Lister's attempts to convince Kryten that Silicon Heaven doesn't really exist meet with no success ; although Kryten later tells his replacement, Hudzen 10, that there is no Silicon Heaven, causing Hudzen to break down when he attempts to cope with the idea, he admits to Lister that he only said it to confuse Hudzen, and that his own faith is still strong:

However, in " Justice ", after Rimmer is jailed for over 9000 years for the accident, Kryten successfully argues at his appeal that Rimmer's guilt is misplaced-as a second technician ( and one who " couldn't outwit a used teabag "), he could not possibly have been responsible for ( and indeed would not have been trusted with ) work that might endanger the crew if not performed correctly.
Kryten had at least three spare heads, one of which has droid-rot ( a condition similar to computer senility ) that gives it a Lancastrian accent.
Once, the other heads held a poll and voted Kryten as the ugly, big-eared one, upsetting Kryten.
The normal pattern would be for Kryten to quote the number of regulation and then in response to a challenge would quote the entire regulation, to which one of the crew would respond with some pithy comment or other.
Upon learning what's happened, Lister realises that this was the murder for which he was imprisoned and is overwhelmed at finally learning that he was not only innocent but Kryten was the one responsible for his lengthy prison sentence.
Having only found one landing jet and that in terrible condition, and with Lister busy repairing Kryten, the crew's attempt at a reverse landing fails and they are trapped on htraE, having missed their window.
Lister and Kryten used the DNA machine one last time to revert back to their original states, and the DNA ship was not seen again.

Kryten and Series
By Series IV, the Cat becomes less obsessed with mating, and begins to develop a friendship with Dave Lister and Kryten, although he maintains a strong dislike for Rimmer.
Kryten is a Series 4000 mechanoid or " slave ' noid " — a robotic servant — and is quite neurotic.
By Series III, and the introduction of Kryten as a main character, a bigger shuttle was needed and Blue Midget faded into the background, only featuring in two episodes of Series III and not showing up at all again until Series VIII.
The wreck of the Nova 5 was discovered in the Series II episode " Kryten ", and is in fact the first spacecraft seen in the show apart from Red Dwarf itself.
