Ferguson started to claim he was not involved in the Long Island Rail Road shootings at all, and repeatedly refused to meet with a psychiatrist chosen by Kunstler and Kuby.

The two took on controversial civil rights and criminal cases, including cases where they represented Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, head of the Egyptian-based terrorist group Gama ' a al-Islamiyah, responsible for the 1993 World Trade Center bombing ; Colin Ferguson, the man responsible for the LIRR shootings, who would later reject Kuby & Kunstler's legal counsel and choose to represent himself at trial ; Qubilah Shabazz, the daughter of Malcolm X, accused of plotting to murder Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam ; Glenn Harris, a New York public school teacher who absconded with a fifteen-year-old girl for two months ; Nico Minardos, a flamboyant actor indicted by Rudy Giuliani for conspiracy to ship arms to Iran ; Darrell Cabey, one of the persons shot by Bernard Goetz ; and associates of the Gambino crime family.

After his parents divorced when he was five years old, Kuby lived with his mother.

In addition to providing legal counsel to David Hampton, a petty con artist who made headlines for his brazen claims, Kuby struck up a personal friendship with him that later continued.

While in college, Kuby interned with William Kunstler, a senior lawyer with twenty years experience, notable for many of his sensational cases including the defense of the Chicago Seven.

From 1983 until Kunstler's death in 1995, Kuby worked as an unofficial partner in Kunstler's law firm, with both men taking up " the fight for the poor, the oppressed and the downtrodden ".

Kunstler and Kuby never formalized a partnership with a contract or tax filings.

Kuby filed a complaint against her with the attorney disciplinary committee.

Kuby, with Kunstler, represented Gregory Lee Johnson, a protester who burned a U. S. Flag at the 1984 Republican National Convention ; Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, the blind cleric who headed the Egyptian-based militant group Al-Gama ' a al-Islamiyya, accused of planning and encouraging terrorist attacks against Americans ; Colin Ferguson, the man responsible for the 1993 LIRR shootings ( who chose to represent himself at trial ); Qubilah Shabazz, the daughter of Malcolm X, accused of plotting to murder Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam ; Glenn Harris, a New York public school teacher who absconded with a fifteen year-old girl for two months ; Darrell Cabey, a youth who was acquitted of assault on Bernard Goetz and successfully sued him for shooting Cabey ; Yu Kikumura, a member of the Japanese Red Army ; and associates of the Gambino Crime Family.

Kuby won Afzali's release on bail, and negotiated a plea bargain to a reduced charge of lying to agents, with deportation in lieu of imprisonment.

Kuby began broadcasting on Air America Radio in 2008, at first as a replacement for Randi Rhodes, then later with a regular show, Doing Time with Ron Kuby.

He was back at WABC in 1996, and in 2000 he became the co-host, with attorney Ron Kuby, of the long-running Curtis and Kuby in the Morning.

In November 1994, former Johnson administration attorney general Ramsey Clark met with Stewart and asked her to take Rahman on as a client after his other lawyers, Ron Kuby and William Kunstler were taken off the case for conflict of interest.

Kuby, who had represented Rahman earlier, disagreed with Stewart's characterization, stating, " I love Lynne, but no one in the world could fairly posit the sheikh as a progressive or liberal on any issue.

He stayed there until May 2004, returning to WABC ( AM ) in 2006 as the sports reporter for Curtis and Kuby, and continuing, with a two-week hiatus, on the Imus in the Morning program following Don Imus's arrival at WABC ( AM ).

A few months after his firing, which generated much public outcry, Wolf was hired by radio station WABC and he appeared weekday mornings with Curtis Sliwa & Ron Kuby as well as Mark Simone's Saturday morning radio program.

He had also served as sports reporter c. 2001 for the WFAN incarnation of the program ; he reunited with Imus after several weeks on WABC, where Wolf had worked as sports reporter for the previous morning show of Curtis and Kuby before Imus had arrived.

Meanwhile, Bacchus was performing with his new project, Vasquez, which included Eric Kuby on drums and former Hanoi Rocks bassist Sami Yaffa.

On March 1, 1994 William Kunstler and Ron Kuby, law partners known for representing unpopular clients, announced they had accepted a request by Ferguson to handle his case.

In April 1994, District Attorney Dillon sought a gag order for all lawyers involved in the case, arguing Kunstler and Kuby had made statements to the media that might be inadmissible during the trial and could influence potential jurors.

Kunstler and Kuby argued they would have no problem finding 12 unbiased jurors, and claimed Ferguson had already been publicly attacked in the press by government and police officials.

" Later, Ron Kuby argued Ferguson had been a frequent target of harassment at the Nassau County Jail, and requested the United States Department of Justice intervene to ensure Ferguson's safety.

Prison officials had been notified by Kuby that an assault was imminent, and were in the process of following up on the warning when Ferguson was attacked.

Kuby, who said he had been warned of the attack by another inmate, stated " The word was out.

" Kuby called the attack racially motivated, and later alleged some jail officials and guards had advance knowledge of the impending assault.

Kunstler and Kuby proposed an innovative defense that Ferguson had been driven to temporary insanity by a psychiatric condition they termed " black rage ".

Kunstler and Kuby argued Ferguson had been driven insane by racial prejudice, and could not be held criminally liable for his actions even though he had committed the killings.

Kuby testified that in a 1998 conversation, Gotti said he had wanted to leave organized crime.

Kuby mocked the charges against Zazi as internally inconsistent, and the very idea that Afzali would deny having a conversation that he knew had been taped.

He has also appeared in seasons 4 and 5 of AMC's Breaking Bad as Kuby.

Kuby said the notes carried by Ferguson on the day of his arrest demonstrated that Ferguson was motivated by rage during the shootings.

On August 12, 1994 Kunstler and Kuby asked Judge Belfi to reconsider Ferguson's competence to stand trial, claiming he was growing more delusional, paranoid and obsessive by the day, and that he was too mentally unbalanced for them to mount any kind of defense.

" Kunstler and Kuby argued Ferguson's behavior was indicative of his mental imbalance.

On September 20, 1994 Kunstler and Kuby filed notice that they would pursue an insanity defense despite the objections of their client.

In the following months, Ferguson sent Judge Belfi several letters regarding disputes between Ferguson, Kunstler and Kuby.

Although George Peck argued the letters proved Ferguson was able to understand the charges against him and was actively participating in his defense, Kuby argued the letters only further demonstrated Ferguson's confused state of mind.

Kuby said of the decision, " What we will have now is a complete circus.

" Kuby continued, " Without a psychiatric defense, Ferguson has no defense.

Attorney Ron Kuby says these laws have incarcerated generations of young men and destroyed families and communities without achieving the goal of reducing drug abuse.

From 1983 until Kunstler's death in 1995, he employed future radio personality Ron Kuby as a junior partner.
