In September 1933 Dollfuss merged his Christian Social Party with elements of other nationalist and conservative groups, including the Heimwehr, which encompassed many workers who were unhappy with the radical leadership of the socialist party, to form the Vaterländische Front, though the Heimwehr continued to exist as an independent organization until 1936, when Dollfuss ' successor Kurt von Schuschnigg forcibly merged it into the Front, instead creating the unabidingly loyal Frontmiliz as paramilitary task force.

Kurt von Schuschnigg was born in Riva del Garda, in the Trentino region.

At Sachsenhausen he was housed in the " bunker " reserved for " special prisoners "-he shared it with the last Chancellor of Austria, Kurt Schuschnigg.

In 1938 he requested Austrian Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg to resist the Nazis and supported an international intervention, and offered to return from exile to take over the reins of government in order to repel Hitler.

There was even a possibility of a Habsburg restoration under the Austrian Chancellors Engelbert Dollfuss and Kurt Schuschnigg, with Crown Prince Otto visiting Austria numerous times.

During the austrofascist period of 1934 – 1938 Raab progressed through the ranks of the corporate state, and was appointed Minister of Commerce by Kurt von Schuschnigg just four weeks before the Anschluss.

The important visitors personally greeted on the steps of the Berghof by Hitler included David Lloyd George ( 3 March 1936 ), the Aga Khan ( 20 October 1937 ), Duke and Duchess of Windsor ( 22 October 1937 ), Kurt von Schuschnigg ( 12 February 1938 ), Neville Chamberlain ( 15 September 1938 ) and Benito Mussolini ( 19 January 1941 ).

Evacuated prisoners included famous political and religious hostages held in Dachau, such as Martin Niemöller, Kurt von Schuschnigg, Édouard Daladier, Léon Blum, Franz Halder and Hjalmar Schacht.

The successor of Dollfuß, the conservative chancellor Kurt von Schuschnigg tried a new round of talks with the outlawed social-democrats and even the monarchists, in order to stabilise the situation again.

Kurt Alois Josef Johann Schuschnigg ( until 1919 Kurt Alois Josef Johann Edler von Schuschnigg, 14 December 1897 – 18 November 1977 ) was Chancellor of the First Austrian Republic, following the assassination of his predecessor, Dr. Engelbert Dollfuss, in July 1934, until Nazi Germany ’ s annexing of Austria, ( Anschluss ), in March 1938.

His second novel, The Professor, published around the time of the Nazi Anschluss, is the story of a liberal academic whose compromises with a repressive government lead eventually to his arrest, imprisonment and execution " while attempting to escape "; contemporary reviewers saw parallels with the Austrian leaders Engelbert Dollfuss and Kurt Schuschnigg.
