In addition, vernacular adaptations of parts of the Ordinary of the Mass appeared as early as the 1260s, when a homily of Berthold of Regensburg describes a profession of faith which was sung after the Latin Credo: " I believe in the Father, I believe in the Son of my Lady Saint Mary, and in the Holy Spirit, Kyrie eleison.

He started by tying a leather rope with a simple knot for every time he prayed Kyrie Eleison (" Lord have Mercy "), but the Devil would come and untie the knots to throw off his count.

" The Kyrie, eleison ( Lord, have mercy ), is sung or said, followed by the Gloria in excelsis Deo ( Glory to God in the highest ), an ancient praise, if appropriate for the liturgical season.

* Gathering: Beginning with a Trinitarian-based greeting or seasonal acclamation ; followed by the Collect for Purity ; the Gloria in Excelsis Deo or some other song of praise, Kyrie eleison, and / or Trisagion ; and then the collect of the day.

Masses are composed of movements: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei ; for example, the Missa Solemnis by Beethoven and the Messe de Nostre Dame by Guillaume de Machaut.

* Missa Cantata ( Latin for " sung mass "): celebrated by a priest without deacon and subdeacon, and thus a form of Low Mass, but with some parts ( the three variable prayers, the Scripture readings, Preface, Pater Noster, and Ite Missa Est ) sung by the priest, and other parts ( Introit, Kyrie, Gloria, Gradual, Tract or Alleluia, Credo, Offertory Antiphon, Sanctus and Benedictus, Agnus Dei, and Communion Antiphon ) sung by the choir.

Permission was given for use, only in Mass celebrated with the people, of the vernacular language, especially in the Biblical readings and the reintroduced Prayers of the Faithful, but, " until the whole of the Ordinary of the Mass has been revised ," in the chants ( Kyrie, Gloria, Creed, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, and the entrance, offertory and communion antiphons ) and in the parts that involved dialogue with the people, and in the Our Father, which the people could now recite entirely together with the priest.

Machaut's mass differs from these in the following ways: ( 1 ) he does not hold a tonal centre throughout the entire work, as the mass uses two distinct modes ( one for the Kyrie, Gloria and Credo, another for Sanctus, Agnus and Ita missa est ); ( 2 ) there is no extended melodic theme that clearly runs through all the movements, and the mass does not use the parody technique ; ( 3 ) there is considerable evidence that this mass was not composed in one creative motion.

Much of the Mass consisted of music that Bach had composed earlier: the Kyrie and Gloria sections had been composed as a Lutheran Missa in 1733 for the Elector of Saxony at Dresden.

* The Kyrie and Gloria were composed in 1733, the former as a lament for the decease of Elector Augustus the Strong ( who had died on 1 February 1733 ) and the latter to celebrate the accession of his successor the Saxon Elector and later Polish King Augustus III of Poland, who converted to Catholicism in order to ascend the throne of Poland.

In his colossal 22-volume El melopeo y maestro of 1613, Italian music theorist Pietro Cerone gave some general guidelines for writing a parody mass: each of the main sections of the mass should start with the beginning of the source ; the interior section of the Kyrie should use a secondary motive ; and some portions, for example the second and third Agnus Dei, should not be chained to the model but be freely composed.

In 926, he increased the land attached to the Subiaco Abbey in exchange for the monks reciting 100 Kyrie eleisons for the salvation of his soul.

The Kyrie chant is the lower part, the new part finds a different harmony for every note of the chant and the same applies to the Alleluia.

Bach did not give the work a title ; instead, in the score four parts of the Latin Mass are each given their own title page —" Missa " ( consisting of the Kyrie and Gloria ), " Symbolum Nicenum " ( the profession of faith or Credo ), " Sanctus ", and " Osanna, Benedictus, Agnus Dei et Dona nobis pacem "— and simply bundled together.

Other denominations also, such as Lutheranism, use " Kyrie, eleison " in their liturgies.

As the Kyrie is the first item in settings of the mass ordinary and the second in the requiem mass ( the only mass proper set regularly over the centuries ), numerous composers have included Kyries in their masses, including Guillaume de Machaut, Guillaume Dufay, Johannes Ockeghem, Josquin des Prez, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Johann Sebastian Bach, Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Luigi Cherubini, Franz Schubert, Ludwig van Beethoven, Gabriel Fauré, Hector Berlioz, Charles Gounod, Giuseppe Verdi, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Igor Stravinsky, Leonard Bernstein, Benjamin Britten, Arvo Pärt, Mark Alburger, and Erling Wold.

* The psychedelic rock band The Electric Prunes recorded a version of " Kyrie Eleison " as part of their album Mass in F Minor ( 1967 ).

* Quebec rock band Offenbach sang " Kyrie " in their 1972 rock version of the Mass for the Dead at the Oratoire Saint-Joseph.

* The progressive metal act Fates Warning released a track on their album The Spectre Within ( 1985 ) entitled " Kyrie eleison ".

But because every birth on this earth foretells a death to come, this section also leads through the terrible events of the crucifixion, and the music reflects that agony, as the trumpets and the tympani play echoes of their motifs from the dark Kyrie.

" Kyrie " was a # 1 hit song by the American pop / rock band Mr. Mister, from their 1985 album Welcome to the Real World.

Prior to the Council of Trent the Kyrie was frequently troped by adding texts particular to a specific feast day between the lines of the Kyrie ; indeed English renaissance composers seem to have regarded the Sarum rite Kyrie as part of the propers and begin their mass settings with the Gloria.

In his Missa Sub tuum presidium, the number of voice parts in the six movements increases from three in the Kyrie, to four in the Gloria, and so on, until there are seven voice parts in the Agnus Dei.

The Kyrie of the three-part Mass is set in a simple litany-like style, but the other Kyrie settings employ dense imitative polyphony.

Followed by the Introit, Kyrie, Gloria, collect, the readings with an alleluia ( alleluia is not said during Lent ), homily ( or sermon ) and recitation of the Nicene Creed.

In a document of unquestionable authority of that period the Office is described as follows: The evening hour, or vespertina synaxis, is composed of four psalms, a capitulum, a response, a hymn, a versicle, a canticle from the Gospel, litany ( Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison ), Pater with the ordinary finale, oratio, or prayer, and dismissal ( Regula Sancti Benedicti, xvii ).

The language is entirely Norwegian, apart from the Kyrie Eleison, and the singing of hymns accompanied by organ music is central.

In the paroisses Mass, he uses plainchant from the Missa cunctipotens genitor Deus as a cantus firmus in two Kyrie movements and in the first Sanctus movement ; the Kyrie Fugue subject is also derived from a chant incipit.

The Misa panamericana is a mariachi folk mass sung in Spanish with new arrangements of classic hymns such as " Kyrie Eleison ".

* Kyrie: Perhaps the most traditional of the mass movements, the Kyrie is in a traditional ABA ' structure, with stately choral writing in the first movement section and more contrapuntal voice leading in the Christe, which also introduces the four vocal soloists.

This is consistent throughout, starting with the opening Kyrie where the syllables Ky-ri are delivered either forte or with sforzando, but the final e is piano.
