Laika (, literally meaning " Barker "; c. 1954 – November 3, 1957 ) was a Soviet space dog that became the first animal to orbit the Earth – as well as the first animal to die in orbit.

On board is the first animal to enter orbit, a dog named Laika.

A separate sealed cabin contained the dog Laika.

Guy Fixsen has also mentioned the strain put on latter-day Laika by their differing lifestyles as instrumentalist-for-hire ( Fiedler ) and studio-bound producer ( Fixsen ), which had also meant that Fixsen had written and created a much larger proportion of the music than he had on previous records.

While Fiedler has not entirely discounted this suggestion ( or stated that Laika have formally split up ), she has cited the difficulties of working with a former romantic partner on any project, as well as the obstacle of her current work.

Laika is memorialized in the form of a statue and plaque at Star City, Russia, the Russian Cosmonaut training facility.

It was crossed as well with the Russian Laika specifically and singularly to add resistance against Northern cold and a longer and thicker coat than the Southern sighthounds were equipped with.

The Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology ( CCHIT ) has developed an open-source program called Laika to test EHR software for compliance with CCHIT interoperability standards.

The new partnership ( with Frenett playing bass ) chose the name of Laika and continued to develop the approach Fiedler had taken with her songs in Moonshake.

Fixsen has claimed that Laika is " taking a break " with about half an album already recorded, and that he and Fiedler will reconvene and complete the tracks at a future date.

Chicago's indie rock venue, The Empty Bottle took TRS-80 under their wing shortly after hearing the band's demo and put them on the bill with artists like Sonic Boom, Acid Mothers Temple, Oval, and Laika among others, which helped grow TRS-80 a local following.

Some modern bands who have achieved some mainstream rock success abroad include Leningrad Cowboys, known for performing with the Red Army Choir, and surf band Laika & the Cosmonauts.

In 1993 McGinnis formed Laika with John Frenett, renowned engineer and producer Guy Fixsen, flautist Louise Elliott and drummers Lou Ciccotelli and Rob Ellis.

She has performed in session as a member of Moonshake, Laika, and PJ Harvey plus a guest spot with God Is My Co-Pilot.
