In Lake Victoria, an isolated lake which formed recently in the African rift valley, over 300 species of cichlid fish adaptively radiated from one parent species in just 15, 000 years.

Locations include the Cyclopean Islands east off Sicily and near Trentino in northern Italy ; Victoria in Australia ; Kerguelen Island in the Indian Ocean ; in the Lake Superior copper district of Michigan, Bergen Hill, New Jersey, Golden, Colorado, and at Searles Lake, California in the United States ; and at Cape Blomidon, Nova Scotia and Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec in Canada ; and in Iceland.

The White Nile, which begins at Lake Victoria in Uganda, supplies about 28 % of the Nile's Egyptian waters.

In its course from Lake Victoria to Juba in southern Sudan, the White Nile's channel drops more than 600 m. In its 1, 600-km course from Juba to Khartoum, Sudan's capital, the river descends just 75 m. In southern and central Sudan, the White Nile passes through a wide, flat plain covered with swamp vegetation and slows almost to the point of stagnation.

Lake Victoria is considered to be part of the rift valley system although it actually lies between the two branches.

A key to the development of Kenya's interior was the construction, started in 1895, of a railway from Mombasa to Kisumu, on Lake Victoria, completed in 1901.

However, some groups proceeded north ; entering Tanzania and settling around Lake Victoria.

At in length, the Murray rises in the Australian Alps, draining the western side of Australia's highest mountains and, for most of its length, meanders across Australia's inland plains, forming the border between the states of New South Wales and Victoria as it flows to the northwest, before turning south for its final or so into South Australia, reaching the ocean at Lake Alexandrina.

In 1915 the three Murray states — New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia — signed the River Murray Agreement which proposed the construction of storage reservoirs in the river's headwaters as well as at Lake Victoria near the South Australian border.

Four large reservoirs were built along the Murray ; in addition to Lake Victoria ( completed late 1920s ).

Some west, Acacia woodlands appear suddenly and stretch west to Lake Victoria and north to the Loita Plains, north of the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Near Lake Victoria there are flood plains developed from ancient lakebeds.

Rainfall amounts vary from a low of in the lee of the Ngorongoro Highlands to a high of on the shores of Lake Victoria.

The other one is the Tanzania Railways Corporation, which provides services between Dar-es-Salaam and Kigoma, a town on the shores of Lake Tanganyika and between Dar-es-Salaam and Mwanza, a city on the shores of Lake Victoria.

To the north and west are the Great Lakes of respectively Lake Victoria ( Africa's largest lake ) and Lake Tanganyika ( the continent's deepest lake, known for its unique species of fish ) – and to the southwest lies Lake Nyasa.

A part of the Great Lakes region, namely the western shore of Lake Victoria consisted of many small kingdoms, most notably Karagwe and Buzinza, which were dominated by their more powerful neighbors Rwanda, Burundi, and Buganda.

Further northwest is Lake Victoria on the Kenya – Uganda – Tanzania border.

There are ferries on Lake Volta at Yeji and Kwadjokrom.

Steamships, barges and ferries quickly became Seneca Lake ’ s ambassadors of commerce and trade.

For about 80 years the famous Lake Victoria ferries have carried rail wagons and vehicles from Uganda to Tanzania.

Once a rival to Lake Victoria as a waterway, the Lake Tanganyika ferries are no longer as busy and train ferries no longer operate.

To raise much needed money and facilitate travel on the Salt Lake Cutoff they set up several ferries across the Weber, Bear and Malad Rivers which were used mostly by Oregon or California bound travelers.

Since the 1900s, Lake Victoria ferries have been an important means of transport between Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya.

Car ferries provide access across Lake Constance to Meersburg, and the Katamaran provides a shuttle service for pedestrians to Friedrichshafen.

Although no ships dock there now, there is still a jetty, which was used by Lake Victoria ferries.

This piece of Lake Minnetonka history once again ferries passengers between the towns of Excelsior and Wayzata as it did over 100 years ago.

The Pere Marquette operated a number of rail car ferries on the Detroit and St. Clair Rivers and on Lake Erie and Lake Michigan.

The PM's fleet of car ferries, which operated on Lake Michigan from Ludington, Michigan to Milwaukee, Kewaunee, and Manitowoc, Wisconsin ( see SS Badger ), were an important transportation link avoiding the terminal and interchange delays around the southern tip of Lake Michigan and through Chicago.

Lake Victoria ferries have operated from the port linking the railway to Mwanza and Bukoba in Tanzania, and to Entebbe, Port Bell, and Jinja in Uganda.

Two passenger ferries make weekly sailings along Lake Malawi between Monkey Bay and Chilumba ; the MV Ilala and the Mtendere.

It is the terminus of a rail line from Khartoum and the point where goods are transferred from rail to ferries going down the Lake Nasser.

Lake Victoria ferries are motor ships ( earlier examples were steamboats ) carrying freight and passengers between Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya on Lake Victoria.

Gatun Lake also serves to provide the millions of gallons of water necessary to operate the Panama Canal locks each time a ship passes through, and provides drinking water for Panama City and Colón.

However, the D & RGW refused to join the national Amtrak system, and continued to operate its share of the Zephyr equipment as the Rio Grande Zephyr between Denver and Salt Lake City until 1983.
