Despite his low opinion of painting, Michelangelo also created two of the most influential works in fresco in the history of Western art: the scenes from Genesis on the ceiling and The Last Judgment on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Rome.

The fresco of The Last Judgment on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel was commissioned by Pope Clement VII, who died shortly after assigning the commission.

The Last Supper measures 450 × 870 cm ( 15 feet × 29 ft ) and covers an end wall of the dining hall at the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy.

Leonardo da Vinci painted The Last Supper on a dry wall rather than on wet plaster, so it is not a true fresco.

However, this was disrupted by a further commission to Michelangelo to decorate the wall above the altar with The Last Judgement, 1537 – 1541.

The wall on which The Last Judgment is painted looms out slightly over the viewer as it rises, and is meant to be somewhat fearful and to instill piety and respect for God's power.

Traditionally, an Orthodox church will have a fresco or mosaic of the Last Judgment on the back ( western ) wall, ( see the 12th-century mosaic pictured at the top of this page ) so that the faithful, as they leave the services, are reminded that they will be judged by what they do during this earthly life.

The frescoes are inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy: Last Judgment ( on the back wall ; including a portrait of Dante ), Hell ( on the right wall ) and paradise ( on the left wall ).

On the left wall near the entrance is a Last Supper by Jacopo Tintoretto while the first altarpiece on the left, is attributed to his studio.

At Goldsmiths he was included in the Freeze Exhibition showing two wall text pieces, one simply showing the names Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, the other, The Last Supper Arranged According to the Flat Back Four Formation ( Jesus Christ in Goal ) showing the names of the Apostles arranged as different football team systems with Jesus in goal.

On the rear wall of the nave, beneath the Last Judgement is a fresco of the Martyrdom of St Sebastian painted by Benozzo Gozzoli in 1465.

In the north wall of the chancel there are two roundels of 18th century glass, one depicting the Crucifixion, the other the Last Supper.

The subject was very commonly painted on a large scale on the western wall of churches, so it was viewed as people left the church, and the term is typically used of these, rather than depictions of the Last Judgement in other locations or media.
