Fleet Admiral William D. Leahy, USN, served as Chief of Staff to the Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy ( July 20, 1942 – March 21, 1949 ).

Leahy is the second most senior U. S. Senator, and second longest-serving Democrat in the U. S. Senate, following Hawaii Senator Daniel Inouye, having served since 1975.

Leahy was recalled to active duty as the personal Chief of Staff to President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942 and served in that position throughout World War II, and continued under President Harry S. Truman until finally retiring in 1949.

Leahy served as the general manager of the AFL's Los Angeles Chargers during their inaugural season in 1960.

Fleet Admiral William Daniel Leahy ( May 6, 1875 – July 20, 1959 ) was an American naval officer, building his reputation through administration and staff work.

As Fleet Admiral, Leahy was the first U. S. naval officer ever to hold a five-star rank in the U. S. Armed Forces.

His son, William Harrington Leahy, graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1927 and was engaged in pre-World War II naval intelligence.

President Roosevelt had tended to trust White House aides like Harry Hopkins and Admiral William D. Leahy to carry on necessary day-to-day coordination.

In 1996, Monan's 24 year presidency, the longest in the university's history, came to an end when he was named University Chancellor and succeeded by President William P. Leahy, S. J.

Senators Charles Schumer, Kirsten Gillibrand, Patrick Leahy, and Bernie Sanders sent a letter to President Barack Obama urging him to fastrack the approval of a preclearance facility in Montreal's Central Station that will benefit U. S. bound travelers from having to stop at the rail station located in Rouses Point, New York for immigration and customs checks whenever they cross the U. S .- Canadian border.
