As Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew described to the BBC and in his memoirs, due to his experiences as a trial lawyer, " I had no faith in a system that allowed the superstition, ignorance, biases, and prejudices of seven jurymen to determine guilt or innocence.

Political leaders in Singapore argued instead for the equality of all citizens, with places in universities, government contracts, political appointments, etc., going to the most deserving candidates, rather than to those chosen on the basis of connections or ethnic background ( It is worth noting that Lee Kuan Yew was originally a Fabian Socialist and opposed racism ).

Singaporean politics have been dominated by the People's Action Party ( PAP ) since the 1959 general election when Lee Kuan Yew became Singapore's first prime minister ( Singapore was then a self-governing state within the British Empire ).

Singapore left the Commonwealth in 1963 to join the Federation of Malaysia, but was expelled from the Federation in 1965 after Lee Kuan Yew disagreed with the federal government in Kuala Lumpur.

Goh's predecessor Lee Kuan Yew served as Singapore's prime minister from independence through 1990.

In 1954, Lim Chin Siong, along with his Chinese High senior, Fong Swee Suan, was introduced to Lee Kuan Yew.

Lee Kuan Yew eventually accused Lim Chin Siong and his supporters of being Communists, though declassified British government documents later suggested that no evidence was ever found that Lim was a Communist.

Lee Kuan Yew imprisoned Lim Chin Siong without trial for many years, preventing him from competing against Lee as leader of the banned break-away opposition party the Barisan Sosialis ( Socialist Front ).

The party won three seats, one by its leader Lee Kuan Yew, and one by co-founder of the PAP, Lim Chin Siong, the election going to the Workers Party's David Saul Marshall.

Following this initial defeat, the PAP decided to re-assert ties with the labour faction of Singapore by promising to release the jailed members of the PAP and at the same time getting them to sign a document that they supported Lee Kuan Yew and the PAP, in the hope that it could attract the votes of working-class Chinese Singaporeans.

According to Tan Jing Quee in the book " Comet in our Sky ", Lee Kuan Yew was being deceptive at this time: while pretending to be on the side of the jailed labour members of the PAP, he was secretly in collusion with the British to stop Lim Chin Siong and the labour supporters from attaining power, whom Lee had courted because of their huge popularity, without which Lee would most likely not have been able to attain power.

" Lee Kuan Yew was secretly a party with Lim Yew Hock "-adds Dr Greg Poulgrain of Griffiths University-" in urging the Colonial Secretary to impose the subversives ban in making it illegal for former political detainees to stand for election.

The result was successful for the PAP under Lee Kuan Yew's control who won the 1959 election, and has held power ever since.

The clash of personalities between PAP leader Lee Kuan Yew and Malaysian Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman resulted in a crisis and led to the latter expelling Singapore from the Federation of Malaysia in August 1965.

Johnny Cash toured the area in 1955, playing on the same local radio show as the Teen Kings and suggested that Orbison approach Sam Phillips at Sun Records, home of rockabilly stars including Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Cash.

Orbison's former Sun Records colleague Jerry Lee Lewis was disgraced when his marriage to his 13-year-old cousin was reported widely in the press.

After attending Tak Sun School ( 德信學校 ) ( a couple of blocks from his home at 218 Nathan Road, Kowloon ), Lee entered the primary school division of La Salle College in 1950 or 1952 ( at the age of 12 ).

Other famous musicians who got their start at Sun include Johnny Cash, Rufus Thomas, Charlie Rich, Howlin ' Wolf, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis.

According to Lee Yun-ping, chairman of the Chinese historical society, Sun needed a certificate to enter the United States at a time when the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 would have otherwise blocked him.

Through Sun, Phillips discovered such recording talent as Howlin ' Wolf, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash.

Singers such as Sonny Burgess (" My Bucket's Got A Hole In It "), Charlie Rich, Junior Parker, and Billy Lee Riley recorded for Sun with some success, while others such as Jerry Lee Lewis, BB King, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, and Carl Perkins would become superstars.

It was Sun record producer and engineer, Jack Clement, who discovered and recorded Jerry Lee Lewis, while owner Sam Phillips was away on a trip to Florida.

The 2010 tribute Million Dollar Quartet is based on the famous photograph of Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis grouped round Elvis Presley at the piano, the night when the four joined in an impromptu jam at Sun Record's one-room sound studio, the " Million Dollar Quartet " of 4 December 1956.

Some of the notable recorders at Sun were Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Charlie Rich and Conway Twitty ( who at that time recorded under his real name of Harold Jenkins ).

Carl Lee Perkins ( April 9, 1932 – January 19, 1998 ) was an American rockabilly musician who recorded most notably at Sun Records Studio in Memphis, Tennessee, beginning during 1954.

During 1986, he returned to the Sun Studio in Memphis, joining Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison on the album Class of ' 55.

Sam Phillips, founder of Sun Records, lived in the area and stated in his autobiography that Muscle Shoals ( primarily radio station WLAY ( AM ), which had both " white " and " black " music on its playlist ) influenced his merging of these sounds at Sun Records with Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash.

Containing such songs as the proto-punk classics " Kick Out the Jams " and " Rama Lama Fa Fa Fa ", the spaced-out " Starship " ( co-credited to Sun Ra because the lyrics were partly cribbed from one of Ra's poems ), and an extended cover of John Lee Hooker's " Motor City is Burning " wherein Tyner praises the role of Black Panther snipers during the Detroit Insurrection of 1967.

Examples include the social climber in George Stevens's A Place in the Sun, the anguished Catholic priest in Hitchcock's I Confess, the doomed regular soldier Robert E. Lee Prewitt in Fred Zinnemann's From Here to Eternity, and the Jewish GI bullied by antisemites in Edward Dmytryk's The Young Lions.

In summer 1962, seventeen-year-old keyboardist Booker T. Jones, twenty-year-old guitarist Steve Cropper, bass player Lewie Steinberg, and Al Jackson Jr., a drummer making his debut with the company, were in the Memphis studio to back up former Sun Records star Billy Lee Riley.
