Rudolf John Frederick Lehmann ( born Bourne End, Buckinghamshire, 2 June 1907 ; died London, 7 April 1987 ) was an English poet and man of letters, and one of the foremost literary editors of the twentieth century, founding the periodicals New Writing and The London Magazine.
An essay by Paul Davies about the creation of this book is included in Professor A. T. Tolley's collection, John Lehmann: a Tribute ( Ottawa, Carleton University Press, 1987 ), which also includes pieces by Roy Fuller, Thom Gunn, Charles Osborne, Christopher Levenson, Jeremy Reed, George Woodcock, and others.

In 1988 / 89, South Australia were at the bottom of the ladder, when coach Barry Richards called Lehmann into the team, playing against Western Australia at the WACA.
In 1989 / 90, Lehmann came into contention for national selection, after scoring 228 runs at the age of 19 in a match against Victoria in that season.
Lehmann was not, however, rewarded with international selection, but he did participate in a Shield victory in 1990 / 91.
From the 1993 / 94 season until 2007 / 08, Lehmann played domestic cricket for his home state, South Australia, as well as for Yorkshire in England ( from 1997 until 2006 ).
During this time, Lehmann had great success as a player for both teams and he captained them both ; South Australia from 1998 / 99 until 2006 / 07 and Yorkshire in 2002.
Lehmann failed to perform in the final Test in Karachi and, despite scoring his maiden ODI century, he was dropped for the first two Tests of the 1998 / 99 Ashes series.
Lehmann spent the 1999 / 2000 international season out of the team, and was not given an opportunity again until the 2000 / 01 season.
Following Hayden's heavy scoring in the 2001 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India, he was afforded a place in the ODI squad, and Lehmann was removed altogether from the squad during the 2001 / 02 season.
Lehmann stayed on briefly, but after two ungainly dismissals to Pakistani paceman Shoaib Akhtar in the first Two Tests of the 2004 / 05 series, in which Lehmann was out of position after wandering across the crease, he was dropped in favour of Shane Watson for the Sydney Test.

Arsenal, meanwhile, had only signed German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann in the 2003 close season, but French striker Thierry Henry was instrumental in Arsenal's success.
Lehmann became Schalke's team hero in their 1997 UEFA Cup Final victory over Internazionale, after playing a strong season and saving an Iván Zamorano penalty in a penalty shootout.
Lehmann was a key player in a solid performance by Borussia Dortmund, winning the German League in an impressive finish, eventually triumphing over Bayer 04 Leverkusen which led the league by five points with only three matches left in the season – beating 1.
During the same season Lehmann became known for his poor disciplinary record.
After a weak season in 2003, which saw Borussia Dortmund slip into mediocrity, increasingly unreliable performances by Lehmann led to his departure from the team.
Lehmann joined Arsenal on 25 July 2003 as a replacement for David Seaman, and played every match as Arsenal went unbeaten for the entire 2003 – 04 FA Premier League season, becoming the first English club to accomplish this feat since Preston North End in the 1888 – 89 season.
However, Lehmann's style of play, often coming out of his goal to intercept passes occasionally led to mistakes, such as in the title-winning match at local rivals Tottenham Hotspur when Lehmann pushed Tottenham striker Robbie Keane as the pair waited for a Tottenham corner, and made a mistake that led to the equalising goal in Arsenal's Champions League defeat at home to Chelsea the same season.
By the middle of the 2004 – 05 season, Lehmann did not play well, and was no longer automatic first-choice, with Spaniard Manuel Almunia starting in several matches instead.
At the end of that season, as speculation again began to mount that he would be replaced over the summer, Lehmann cemented his position in the Arsenal goal with a man-of-the-match performance against Manchester United in the 2005 FA Cup final.
Lehmann had an outstanding 2005 – 06 season with Arsenal, making his 100th Premier League appearance for the club in their game against West Bromwich Albion on 15 April 2006.
In the first league game of the 2007 – 08 season, Lehmann made a serious error after just 52 seconds, allowing David Healy to score for Fulham.
On 26 January 2008, Lehmann appeared in Arsenal's second FA Cup game of the season, keeping his second successive clean sheet as Arsenal beat Newcastle United 3 – 0.
After making 10, Lehmann was omitted upon their return and did not play any further part in the season.
Having scored over 700 runs in the first half of the season, Lehmann was drafted into the Australian squad for the New Year's Test against Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground after both openers David Boon and Geoff Marsh were injured.
Following another season, Lehmann expressed dissatisfaction, and returned to South Australia.
The following season he remained as the second choice behind Jens Lehmann but found himself thrust into the spotlight in 2006 when he replaced Robert Pires in the 20th minute of the Champions ' League Final against Barcelona following the sending-off of Lehmann.
