The island belongs to the Lennart Bernadotte-Stiftung ( English: the Lennart Bernadotte Foundation ), an entity created by the late Prince Lennart, Count Bernadotte af Wisborg, formerly a Prince of Sweden and Duke of Småland.

In 1932 Prince Wilhem gave Mainau to his only child Count Lennart Bernadotte who owned it until 1974 when he transferred the island to a foundation.

Count Bernadotte formed Enterprise Mainau GmbH in 1991 as a private enterprise to manage the island for the benefit of the Lennart Bernadotte-Stiftung.

Since January 2007 Bettina Bernadotte, the eldest daughter of Lennart and Sonja Bernadotte, directs the Mainau GmbH as the current manager.

Lennart Bernadotte, Count of Wisborg, né Prince Gustaf Lennart Nicolaus Paul of Sweden ( 8 May 1909 – 21 December 2004 ), a grandson of King Gustaf V of Sweden, was until 1932 a Prince of Sweden and the Duke of Småland.

By his marriage on 11 March 1932 he was subsequently stripped of his title, renounced his rights and became Mr. Lennart Bernadotte.

Thus, on ennoblement by the Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg, on 2 July 1951 he became Lennart Bernadotte, Count of Wisborg.

After the war, Dmitri was reburied in the palace chapel on the island of Mainau in Lake Constance in southern Germany as a favour to his sister Marie, as her son Count Lennart Bernadotte owned the property there.

Under his tutelage, Sweden and the Protestant cause developed a number of excellent commanders, such as Lennart Torstensson, who would go on to defeat Sweden's enemies and expand the boundaries and the power of the empire long after Gustav Adolph's death in battle.

After the death of former president of Estonia Lennart Meri on 14 March 2006, journalist Argo Ideon from Eesti Ekspress proposed to honor the president's memory by naming Tallinn Airport after him – "" ( Lennart Meri International Airport ), drawing parallels with JFK Airport, Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, Istanbul-Atatürk Airport etc.

After Estonia regained independence from the Soviet Union on August 20, 1991, the exiled association of the German Baltic nobility sent an official message to the president-to-be Lennart Meri that no member of the association would claim proprietary rights to their former Estonian lands.

In the case of the Ark, Erskine and Vernon Gracie ( who worked with Erskine on Byker Wall in Newcastle ) collaborated with London architects Rock Townsend and latterly Lennart Bergstrom in Stockholm.
