The strip was created by Leo Baxendale under the title When the Bell Rings, and first appeared in The Beano in issue 604, dated 13 February 1954.

Leo Baxendale drew it until 1962, when David Sutherland replaced him, initially using a similar drawing style to Baxendale, but simplifying it later in the decade.

Leo Baxendale ( born 27 October 1930 in Preston, Lancashire ) is a British cartoonist, who was the creator of the classic Beano strips Little Plum ( 1953 ), Minnie the Minx ( 1953 ), The Bash Street Kids ( created October 1953, began publication February 1954 ) and The Three Bears ( 1959 ).

In 1987 Leo Baxendale founded the publishing house, Reaper Books.

Leo Baxendale created Little Plum in 1953 as a puny cartoon character in a dangerous cartoon world.

The strip was mostly drawn by Dudley D. Watkins until his death in 1969, though Leo Baxendale and Albert Holroyd occasionally filled in for Watkins.

It made its first appearance in issue 881, dated 6 June 1959, drawn by Leo Baxendale at first and then by Bob McGrath for most of its run.

In 1964 Reid and fellow artist Leo Baxendale left D. C. Thomson to work for Odhams Press ' new titles Wham!
