In September 1981, Sting made his first live solo appearance, performing on all four nights of the fourth Amnesty International benefit The Secret Policeman's Other Ball at the invitation of producer Martin Lewis.

Sting's first involvement in the human rights cause came in September 1981 when he was invited by producer Martin Lewis to participate in the fourth Amnesty International gala The Secret Policeman's Other Ball following the example set at the 1979 show by Pete Townshend.

From 1941 to 1947, the USO presented more than 400, 000 performances, featuring entertainers such as Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Frank Sinatra, Marlene Dietrich, Hattie McDaniel, Eubie Blake, Ann Sheridan, Laurel and Hardy, The Marx Brothers, Jack Benny, Larry Adler, Ossy Renardy, Zero Mostel, James Cagney, James Stewart, Gary Cooper, Doraine and Ellis, Lena Horne, Danny Kaye, The Rockettes, Al Jolson, Fred Astaire, Curly Joe DeRita, The Andrews Sisters, Joe E. Brown, Joe E. Lewis, Ray Bolger, Lucille Ball, Glenn Miller, Martha Raye, Mickey Rooney, Betty Hutton, Dinah Shore, and most famously, Bob Hope.

The first of these was the June 1979 appearances by Pete Townshend at The Secret Policeman's Ball, a series of benefit shows in London for human rights organization Amnesty International at which the usually electric guitar-wielding Townshend was persuaded by benefit producer Martin Lewis to perform his hits " Pinball Wizard " and " Won't Get Fooled Again " on acoustic guitar.

Two years later in September 1981 Lewis produced a sequel benefit show The Secret Policeman's Other Ball that featured similar performances by other rock performers including Sting, Phil Collins and Bob Geldof.

In 1979, Connolly was invited by producer Martin Lewis to join the cast of The Secret Policeman's Ball, the third in the series of the Secret Policeman's Ball fundraising shows for Amnesty International.

In 1981, John Cleese and Martin Lewis invited Connolly to appear in that year's Amnesty show, The Secret Policeman's Other Ball.

For example, Mary Ball Washington ( mother of President George Washington ) specified in her will, dated 20 May 1788, that one-half of her " iron kitchen furniture " should go to her grandson, Fielding Lewis, and the other half to Betty Carter, a granddaughter.

They also talked about the origin of the show name with Cleese crediting producer Lewis for coining the Secret Policeman's Ball title.

( A one-hour TV special drawn from the performances aired on Britain's ITV network by London Weekend Television in December 1979 to coincide with the release of the Secret Policeman's Ball record album on Island Records, produced by Lewis, of the comedy performances.

Original producer Martin Lewis was asked to create a new version of The Secret Policeman's Other Ball specially for the American marketplace.

Then Cleese and Lewis teamed up ( with Amnesty's new fundraising director Peter Walker ) in 1979 to create The Secret Policeman's Ball-the first show to carry what became the iconic Secret Policeman's Ball title.

In Samuel Lewis ’ s 1837 Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, he describes the new Hammersmith Works as part of the entry for ‘ Ball ’ s-Bridge ’ as follows: ‘ Near the village are the Hammersmith iron-works, established in 1834 by Mr. R. Turner: the front of this extensive establishment is 200 feet long, presenting a handsome façade towards the road ; and at the back are numerous dwelling houses for the workmen, which are called the Hammersmith cottages.

Among those receiving such special treatment ( some more than once ) were Groucho Marx, Laurence Olivier, Judy Garland, Katharine Hepburn ( without an audience ), Bette Davis, Orson Welles, Noël Coward ( who appeared on the same show along with Alfred Lunt, Lynn Fontanne, Tammy Grimes, and Brian Bedford ), John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Alfred Hitchcock, Fred Astaire, Woody Allen, Gloria Swanson, Jerry Lewis, Lucille Ball, Zero Mostel (" on some shows I've had just one guest, but tonight I have Zero ") and David Bowie.

Smith & Wesson acquired Lewis Jennings ' improved version of inventor Walter Hunt's 1848 " Volition Repeating Rifle " and its caseless " Rocket Ball " ammunition, which had been produced in small numbers by Robbins & Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont.

Other famous owners included Dick Martin ( 1971 ), Lucille Ball ( who got her 1971 Blackhawk as a gift from her husband Gary Morton with a dash plaque saying I Love Lucy-Gary ), Sammy Davis Jr. ( who owned two 1972, one for himself and one for his wife ), Dean Martin ( who owned three and crashed his 1972 Blackhawk with vanity plate DRUNKY ), Robert Goulet ( 1972 ), Evel Knievel ( 1974 ), Wilson Pickett ( 1974 ), Luigi Colani ( 1974 ), Johnnie Taylor ( 1975 ), Johnny Cash ( 1975 ), Curd Jürgens ( 1977 ), Larry Holmes ( 1982 ), as well as Jerry Lewis, Liberace, Willie Nelson, Lou Brock, Isaac Hayes, Muhammed Ali, George Foreman, Tom Jones, Billy Joel, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Al Pacino, Wayne Newton and H. B.

In September 2001, Lewis was unable to perform at a planned London charity event.
