The Vox Libera Award is given to a non-journalist who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the principles of free expression and who has had made an important and sustained contribution-at home or abroad-to those same principles.

From that point on, the choir has been consistently referred to as " Libera " when acting in its commercial capacity.

At some time around 493 BC, soon after the expulsion of Rome's last King and the establishment of the Roman Republic, the Roman senate provided a temple for the so-called Aventine Triad of Ceres, Liber and Libera, patron deities of the Roman commoners or plebs ; the dedication followed one of the first in a long series of threatened or actual plebeian secessions.

The Requiem aeternam, Dies irae, and Libera me movements end in a brief choral phrase, consisting mainly of slow half notes, that resolves the tritone's discord to an F major chord, while at the end of the Agnus Dei the tenor ( in his only transition from the Owen poems to the Requiem liturgy, on the key words, Dona nobis pacem – Give us peace ) outlines a perfect fifth from C to G before moving down to F ♯ to resolve the chorus's final chord.

When Gioachino Rossini died in 1868, Verdi suggested that a number of Italian composers should collaborate on a Requiem in Rossini's honor, and began the effort by submitting the conclusion, Libera me.

Verdi re-used the " Libera me, Domine " he had written for the Rossini Requiem in his 1872 Requiem for Manzoni.

From the end of the 3rd century BC, Demeter's temple at Enna, in Sicily, was acknowledged as Ceres ' oldest, most authoritative cult centre, and Libera was recognised as Proserpina, Roman equivalent to Demeter's daughter Persephone.

Before his official adoption as a Roman deity, Liber was companion to two different goddesses in two separate, archaic Italian fertility cults ; Ceres, an agricultural and fertility goddess of Rome's Hellenised neighbours, and Libera, who was either Liber's female equivalent or became so through assimilation.

According to Livy, the dictator A. Postumius vowed games ( ludi ) and a joint public temple to a Triad of Ceres, Liber and Libera on Rome's Aventine Hill, c. 496 BC.

The formal, official development of the Aventine Triad may have encouraged the assimilation of its individual deities to Greek equivalents: Ceres to Demeter, Liber to Dionysus and Libera to Persephone or Kore.

Liber was closely, often interchangeably identified with Bacchus, Dionysius and their mythology but was not entirely subsumed by them ; in the late Republican era, Cicero could insist on the " non-identity of Liber and Dionysus " and describe Liber and Libera as children of Ceres.
