The flag's Latin inscription, " Libertas quæ sera tamen ", is the motto of the " Inconfidencia Mineira ," which fought for Brazilian independence from Portugal.

The paper's motto is Lux et Libertas – Light ( referring to the Age of Enlightenment ) and Freedom.

The other significant female icon in American culture was a representation of Liberty, derived from Libertas, the goddess of freedom widely worshipped in ancient Rome, especially among emancipated slaves.

Here, the god was sometimes named Liber and sometimes Libertas.

Lucca managed, at first as a democracy, and after 1628 as an oligarchy, to maintain its independence alongside of Venice and Genoa, and painted the word Libertas on its banner until the French Revolution in 1789.
