The origins of Linköping University date back to 1967 when a branch of Stockholm University was placed in Linköping, offering education within humanities, social sciences and natural sciences.

In 1970 all activities were brought together in three faculties within the Linköping University College: the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine and the Institute of Technology.

In 1977 former teacher training colleges in Linköping and Norrköping were transferred to Linköping University and in 1986 the Faculty of Health Sciences was formed, based on the faculty of medicine and regional funded education in health care professions.

The renowned Carl Malmsten School of Furniture has been part of Linköping University since 2000.

The idea of a canal across southern Sweden was first put forward as early as 1516, by Hans Brask, the bishop of Linköping.

After the canal was opened, Motala Verkstad focused on producing equipment, locomotives and rolling stock for the newly constructed railways, beginning a tradition of railway engineering that continues to this day in the form of AB Svenska Järnvägsverkstädernas Aeroplanavdelning ( ASJA ) that was bought by the aeroplane manufacturer SAAB in Linköping.

" Svenska Aeroplan AB ( aktiebolag )" ( Swedish for " Swedish Aeroplane Company Limited ") ( SAAB ) was founded in 1937 in Trollhättan, with the merger of SAAB and Linköping based ASJA the headquarters moved to Linköping.

Datasaab was the computer division of and later a separate company spun off from aircraft manufacturer Saab in Linköping, Sweden.

The Institute of Technology at Linköping University, or Tekniska högskolan vid Linköpings universitet ( former Linköpings tekniska högskola, LiTH ), is the faculty of science and engineering of Linköping University, located in Linköping and Norrköping in Sweden.

A minority of members, past and present, are from Gothenburg, Sweden ; with the exception of Patrik Jensen, who is from Linköping ; Per Möller Jensen, who is from Denmark ; Adrian Erlandsson, who is from Malmö ; and Marco Aro, who is from Finland.
