He tried several times, fruitlessly, to replace Liu Ying with Liu Ruyi, as his desire was objected to by Liu Ying's mother Empress Lü Zhi.

Lü Zhi, now declared the empress dowager when her son Liu Ying succeeded to the throne as Emperor Hui after Gaozu's death, commenced an inhumane plot against Qi and Liu Ruyi.

Instead of directly moving against Zhou Chang and Liu Ruyi, though, Lü Zhi circumvented Zhou by first summoning him to Chang ' an, and then summoning Liu Ruyi.

At the age of 14, Liu Bei, sponsored by a more affluent relative who recognised his potential in leadership, went to study under the tutelage of Lu Zhi ( a prominent scholar and, at the time, former Administrator of Jiujiang ).

" Lü Wen then offered his daughter Lü Zhi's hand in marriage to Liu Bang and they were wed. Lü Zhi bore Liu Bang a daughter ( later Princess Yuan of Lu ) and a son Liu Ying ( later Emperor Hui of Han ).

However, Liu Bang's family, including Lü Zhi and her children, remained in Pei County, which was a territory of Xiang Yu's kingdom of Western Chu.

Lü Zhi and Liu Bang's family were captured by Chu forces and held hostage.

During this period of time, Lü Zhi started an illicit affair with Shen Yiji ( 審食其 ), one of Liu Bang's followers who was also held captive together with her.

As part of their agreement, Xiang Yu released Lü Zhi and Liu Bang's family and returned them to Liu.

He instated Lü Zhi as his empress and their son Liu Ying as crown prince.

Gaozu placed Empress Lü Zhi and the crown prince Liu Ying ( Lü Zhi's son ) in charge of the capital Chang ' an and making key decisions in court, assisted by the chancellor Xiao He and other ministers.

Since Lü Zhi had strong rapport with many ministers, they generally opposed Gaozu's decision but the emperor seemed bent on deposing Liu Ying.

One exception was Concubine Qi, whom Lü Zhi greatly resented because of the dispute over the succession between Liu Ruyi ( Qi's son ) and Liu Ying.

These records state that Bu began his rule before 477, was recognized as the ruler of Japan by the Liu Song, Southern Qi, and Liang dynasties, and continued his rule through to 502.

Wei Yan became a valuable asset to Liu Bei's military, and he continued to serve Liu Bei's state of Shu Han well until Zhuge Liang died.

Liu Jin's plot was ultimately discovered, and he was executed in 1510 however the rise of corrupt enunchs continued throughout Zhengde's reign.

It was said that at that time, in addition to the continued conflict with Lu Guangchou, substantial portions of the region were controlled by other warlords — Qu Hao at Jiao Prefecture ( 交州, in modern Hanoi, Vietnam ); Liu Shizheng ( 劉士政 ) at Gui Prefecture ( 桂州, in modern Guilin, Guangxi ); Ye Guanglüe ( 葉廣略 ) at Yong Prefecture ( 邕州, in modern Nanning, Guangxi ); Pang Juzhao ( 龐巨昭 ) at Rong Prefecture ( 容州, in modern Yulin, Guangxi ); Liu Changlu ( 劉昌魯 ) at Gao Prefecture ( 高州, in modern Maoming, Guangdong ); and Liu Qian ( 劉潜, different person than Liu Zhi's father ) at Xin Prefecture ( 新洲, in modern Yunfu, Guangdong ).

Because of these incursions, the Qing government began constructing a series of coastal defenses and on 12 October 1885 Taiwan was made a province, with Liu Mingchuan serving as the first governor.

Guan Yu ( Wade-Giles spelling: Kuan Yu ) ( died 219 ) was a general serving under the warlord Liu Bei during the late Eastern Han Dynasty of China.
