He is said to have turned to stone a coven of witches, which have become the stone circle of Long Meg and Her Daughters.

Continuing north, it passes close to the ancient stone circle known as Long Meg and Her Daughters and through the sparsely populated beef and dairy farming regions of the vale of Cumbria on the Solway Plain.

Long Meg herself is a 3. 6 m high monolith of red sandstone 18 m to the southwest of the circle made by her Daughters.

Long Meg is marked with examples of megalithic art including a cup and ring mark, a spiral and rings of concentric circles.

Another legend states that if you walk round the circles and count the number of stones correctly, then put your ear to Long Meg, you will hear her whisper.

Her stage name is taken from Geena Davis's character in the film The Long Kiss Goodnight.

Her other theatrical roles include leads at the Roundabout Theatre, Manhattan Theater Club, Playwrights Horizons and many regional theaters including the Long Wharf, Yale Repertory Theatre, Arena Stage, the Mark Taper Forum and the Actors Theatre of Louisville.

Her autobiography, The Long Loneliness, was published in 1952.

Her second poetry book, The Long Cold Green Evenings of Spring, was a finalist for the Lowther Award in 1997, and her first novel, Excessive Joy Injures the Heart, was chosen one of the ten best books of the year by The Toronto Star in 2000. Also in 2000 Mrs. Harvor won the Alden Nowlan Award, in 2003 the Marian Engel Award, and in 2004 the Malahat Novella Prize for " Across Some Dark Avenue of Plot He Carried Her Body.

Her recent awards include finalist placements for the Stephen Dunn Poetry Award, The Broome Review ( USA ); the Malahat Review Long Poem Competition ; and Descant ’ s Winston Collins Best Canadian Poem.

Her publications include in the second person ( Longspoon 1985 ), On the Edge of Genre: The Contemporary Canadian Long Poem ( 1991 ), Making a Difference: Canadian Multicultural Literature ( 1996 ), and a new edition of it, Making a Difference: Multicultural Literatures in English Canada ( 2006 ).

After 3 sold-out limited 7 " s (" Many Thanks For Your Honest Opinion " on Dance to the Radio, " Watching " on Double Dragon, and " Let Her Go " on Angular Records ) and touring around the UK and Europe with bands such as The Long Blondes and The Research, the group released their debut album Grown-Ups, produced by Alan Smyth and James Ford, in June 2007 on Angular Records in the UK, Slumberland Records in the US, Fabtone in Japan and Speak N Spell in Australia.

Her family later moved to North Hamilton Avenue in Lindenhurst, New York, a village within the Long Island town of Babylon.

Her hometown became Manhasset, New York, on Long Island, where she grew up and attended high school.

Her frustration with the fate of African women — as well as her ultimate acceptance of it — is expressed in her first novel, So Long a Letter.
