Secretary Webster admitted that the employment of force might have been justified by the necessity of self-defence, but denied that such necessity existed, while Lord Ashburton, although he maintained that the circumstances afforded excuse for what was done, apologized for the invasion of United States territory.

Robert Offley Ashburton Crewe-Milnes, 1st Marquess of Crewe KG, PC ( 12 January 1858 – 20 June 1945 ), known as The Lord Houghton from 1885 to 1895 and as The Earl of Crewe from 1895 to 1911, was a British statesman and writer.

A member of the distinguished Baring family, Lord Ashburton was the second son of Sir Francis Baring, 1st Baronet, the uncle of Francis Baring, 1st Baron Northbrook, Evelyn Baring, 1st Earl of Cromer and Edward Baring, 1st Baron Revelstoke, and the great-uncle of Thomas Baring, 1st Earl of Northbrook and Evelyn Baring, 1st Baron Howick of Glendale.

Lord Ashburton was succeeded by his eldest son, the second Baron.

The first Baron Northbrook's uncle ( his father's next youngest brother ) was Alexander Baring, 1st Baron Ashburton, two of his first cousins ( both sons of Henry Baring, his father's next youngest brother after Lord Ashburton ) were Edward Baring, 1st Baron Revelstoke and Evelyn Baring, 1st Earl of Cromer, and one of his first cousins once removed ( third son of Lord Cromer ) was Evelyn Baring, 1st Baron Howick of Glendale.

Several of the founders of the University of London are directly associated with the founding of the school ; they include Henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux ( who appears to be singled out as the ring leader in A tradition for Freedom ), Lord Auckland ( probably George Eden, 1st Earl of Auckland ), William Bingham Baring, 2nd Baron Ashburton, Sir Isaac Lyon Goldsmid, Henry Hallam, Leonard Horner ( The Royal Society of Edinburgh has described UCS as his ' monument ' ), James Mill, Viscount Sandon ( probably either Dudley Ryder, 1st Earl of Harrowby or Dudley Ryder, 2nd Earl of Harrowby ), James Lock, Stephen Lushington D. C. L.

Grattan made himself completely master of the subject, and communicated his opinions to Lord Ashburton when that nobleman arrived in the United States in 1842 as minister plenipotentiary for the purpose of settling the boundary question.

According to a report in The Times, quoting the ' New York Courier and Inquirer ', the American secretary of state raised it in a letter to Lord Ashburton: " The Creole case is presented in strong terms by Mr Webster in a letter ( which, when published, will bring all the anti-slavery people about his ears )..." In 1841-1843 he was in Europe on behalf of the Tyler administration, and he is said to have been instrumental in causing the appointment of Lord Ashburton to negotiate in Washington concerning the boundary dispute between Maine and Canada.

The Town Hall was built in 1840 by Richard Carver for Lord Ashburton.

Lord Bath married the Honourable Harriet Baring, daughter of Alexander Baring, 1st Baron Ashburton, on 10 April 1830.

His statue stands opposite Earl of Clarendon in his Lord Chancellor's robes, a symbol of the respect for the law and royalism.

William H. Rehnquist, late Chief Justice of the United States, was inspired to add four golden stripes to the sleeves of his judicial robes after seeing the costume of the Lord Chancellor in a production of Iolanthe.

The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Chief Baron ( up to the extinction of the office on the retirement of Christopher Palles in 1916 ) and other puisne judges of the High Court would likewise have worn scarlet robes with ermine hood and ermine-trimmed mantle.
