In 1922 in the Egyptian Valley of the Kings the tomb of Tutankhamun ( KV62 ) was opened by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon.

After three hard years, Carter was employed by Lord Carnarvon to supervise his excavations from 1907.

Carter's own notes and photographic evidence, indicate that he, Lord Carnarvon and Lady Evelyn Herbert entered the burial chamber shortly after the tomb's discovery and before the official opening.

Lord Carnarvon declined to entertain the proposal made by Mr Brand that the territory should be given up by Great Britain.

It is now established that it was Gaston Maspero, then Director of the Antiquities Department, who proposed Carter to Lord Carnarvon.

Lord Carnarvon received in 1914 the concession to dig in the Valley of the Kings, in replacement of Theodore Davis who had resigned.

In 1922, Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter together opened the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings, exposing treasures unsurpassed in the history of archaeology.

As a means of diversion, Froude travelled to the Southern African Colony of Natal, unofficially for colonial secretary Lord Carnarvon, to report on the best means of promoting a confederation of its colonies and states.
