Lotus Cars is a British manufacturer of sports and racing cars based at the former site of RAF Hethel, a World War II airfield in Norfolk.

Having worked as sporting director and driver development manager at Comtec Racing, Donnelly has recently formed the Donnelly track academy specialising in Lotus trackday events and racing services in Norfolk.

It was built in both right-hand drive and left-hand drive versions at the Lotus Cars plant in Hethel, Norfolk, England.

Produced by Lotus at their Hethel, Norfolk factory, the Speedster carried the Lotus internal model identification Lotus 116 and the code name Skipton for the 2. 2N / A version and Tornado for the 2. 0 L Turbo.

The drivetrain comprised an enlarged 2172 cc version of the Lotus 1973 cc 907 engine, a 16V slant four engine ( the Sunbeam version being type 911, similar to Lotus 912 ), along with a ZF gearbox, both mounted in the car at Ludham airfield close to the Lotus facility in Hethel, Norfolk, where the almost-complete cars were shipped from Linwood.

1-2-3 was originally written by Jonathan Sachs, who had written two spreadsheet programs previously while working at Concentric Data Systems, Inc. To aid its growth, in the UK, and possibly elsewhere, Lotus 1-2-3 was the very first computer software to use television consumer advertising.

Lotus Cars joined Jaguar, MIRA Ltd and Caparo on a luxury hybrid executive sedan project called " Limo-Green "— funded by the UK Government Technology Strategy Board.

At the time of his death, both Chapman and Lotus were linked with the DeLorean Motor Company scandal over the use of UK Government subsidies for the production of the DeLorean DMC-12, for which Lotus had designed the chassis.

The Lotus Seven was offered in kit form to allow buyers to avoid new car tax in the UK.

The LT5 was engineered by Lotus Engineering in the UK headed by design manager David Whitehead, the engine was produced by Mercury Marine at Stillwater OK headed by Project Engineer Terry D. Stinson.

IM Group, ( Isuzu ( UK ) Ltd ) still marketed the Piazza in single trim / engine form, but they only sold the updated ' Lotus ' Piazza.

The updated ' Handling by Lotus ' car was available from 1987 and the handling, although keeping the live axle arrangement was transfomed by Lotus in the UK after significant development work, involving modified suspension layouts, larger brakes, specially produced dampers and Goodyear tyres.

Isuzu ( UK ) Ltd, the West Bromwich-based importer, sold the Lotus Piazza from 1987 to 1989, before concentrating on the 4WD Isuzu Trooper.

The kit and sportscar manufacturer Tiger Racing Ltd situated in UK ( 20 years ), unconnected to the ERA voiturettes or Grand Prix cars, currently owns the English Racing Automobiles trade mark and the ERA trademark and produces two vehicles badged as ERAs: a two-seater sports car called the ERA 30 which is very similar in appearance to the Lotus 23 and Lotus 30, and a single-seater called the ERA HSS.

In the UK, the arrival of the Cosworth DFV engine meant that many teams could now afford to build their own chassis around a good engine / transmission package, so Cooper, Lotus and Brabham stopped the production of customer Formula 1 cars.

For, " Lotus Renault GP " has been rebranded as " Lotus F1 Team " and their cars will be known as " Lotus ", whereas the former Team Lotus has been renamed Caterham F1 Team and their cars will be known as " Caterhams ".

Lotus provided the Range Extender engine for a prototype XJ series-hybrid car.

Whilst the 1340 engine, which used the original 109E 3-bearing block, may have initiated Lotus ' interest, this was never used in production Elans though prototype 1340 twin-cams were built.

Whilst still a prototype, in September 1957, it was raced at the Brighton Speed Trials and by the end of 1958 Graham Hill was winning races with the Coventry Climax-engined ' Super Seven ' The car has had a strong racing history throughout its life under both Lotus and Caterham stewardship.

Lotus was hoping to sell the car through Toyota dealerships worldwide, badged as a Lotus Toyota, but the project never came to fruition and the prototype was shelved ( although Lotus's collaboration with Toyota had some influence on the design of the Toyota MR2 ).

The Lotus Europa S1 was based on a prototype built to compete for Henry Ford II's contract to build a Le Mans race car in the early 1960s.

Having planned to follow the then-advanced use of ground effects by Lotus, initial testing of the prototype revealed fundamental design issues ; the designers failed to take account of the variable ride height of cars during braking and acceleration, stopping the ground effects functioning correctly.
