Guillaume-Chrétien de Lamoignon de Malesherbes ( 6 December 1721 – 23 April 1794 ), often referred to as Malesherbes or Lamoignon-Malesherbes, was a French statesman, minister, and afterwards counsel for the defence of Louis XVI.

Malesherbes presented a strong remonstrance against the new system, and was at once banished to his country seat at Malesherbes, to be recalled, however, with the old parlement on the accession of Louis XVI, and to be made minister of the maison du roi in 1775.

Together with François Tronchet and Malesherbes, he defended Louis XVI, when the king was brought before the Convention for trial.

Efforts by Guillaume-Chrétien de Malesherbes, minister to Louis XVI, and Jean-Paul Rabaut Saint-Etienne, spokesman for the Protestant community in France, working with members of the parlement of the Ancien Régime, were particularly effective convincing the king to open French society over the concern expressed by some advisors.

Louis Malesherbes Goldsborough ( February 18, 1805 – February 20, 1877 ) was a rear admiral in the United States Navy during the American Civil War.
