A suggestion from Louis De Broglie, a physicist in France, showed us that these electrons are not point particles but waves.

Louis de Broglie later ( 1924 ) showed in his doctoral dissertation that electrons are in fact much like photons in the respect that they act both as waves and as particles in a dual manner as Einstein had shown earlier for light.

The particle nature is more easily discerned if an object has a large mass, and it was not until a bold proposition by Louis de Broglie in 1924 that the scientific community realised that electrons also exhibited wave – particle duality.

The pilot wave model, originally developed by Louis de Broglie and further developed by David Bohm into the hidden variable theory proposes that there is no duality, but rather a system exhibits both particle properties and wave properties simultaneously, and particles are guided, in a deterministic fashion, by the pilot wave ( or its " quantum potential ") which will direct them to areas of constructive interference in preference to areas of destructive interference.

In 1925 and 1927, Mulliken traveled to Europe, working with outstanding spectroscopists and quantum theorists such as Erwin Schrödinger, Paul A. M. Dirac, Werner Heisenberg, Louis de Broglie, Max Born, and Walther Bothe ( all of whom eventually received Nobel Prizes ) and Friedrich Hund, who was at the time Born's assistant.
