The term was first coined by August Derleth, a contemporary correspondent of Lovecraft, who used the name of the creature Cthulhu — a central figure in Lovecraft literature and the focus of Lovecraft's famous short story The Call of Cthulhu ( first published in pulp magazine Weird Tales in 1928 )— to identify the system of lore employed by Lovecraft and his literary successors.

Although not formalised and acknowledged as a mythos per se, Lovecraft did correspond with contemporary writers ( Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard, Robert Bloch, Frank Belknap Long, Henry Kuttner, and Fritz Lieber – a group referred to as the " Lovecraft Circle ") – and shared story elements: Robert E. Howard's character Friedrich Von Junzt reads Lovecraft's Necronomicon in the short story " The Children of the Night " ( 1931 ), and in turn Lovecraft mentions Howard's Unaussprechlichen Kulten in the stories " Out of the Aeons " ( 1935 ) and " The Shadow Out of Time " ( 1936 ).

Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges wrote his short story " There Are More Things " in memory of Lovecraft.

French philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari made reference to Lovecraft in A Thousand Plateaus and called the short story " Through the Gates of the Silver Key " one of his masterpieces.

The author also wrote pioneering biographies of many key fantasy writers, most as short articles, but two as full-length studies of the prominent authors Robert E. Howard and H. P. Lovecraft, the first major independent biographies of both writers.

Lovecraft has a villainous wizard in his short story " The Thing on the Doorstep " called Ephraim Waite ; according to Robert M. Price this character was based on Waite.

A number of speculative fiction works present a dystheistic perspective, at least as far back as the works of H. P. Lovecraft and Olaf Stapledon's influential philosophical short novel Star Maker.

The tome was created by H. P. Lovecraft and first appeared in his short story " Polaris " ( 1918 ).

In his short work with E. Hoffmann Price, " Through the Gates of the Silver Key ," H. P. Lovecraft briefly mentions Tartary: " Upon their cloaked heads there now seemed to rest tall, uncertainly coloured mitres, strangely suggestive of those on certain nameless figures chiselled by a forgotten sculptor along the living cliffs of a high, forbidden mountain in Tartary ..."

The Cthulhu Mythos is a shared fictional universe, based on the work of American horror writer H. P. Lovecraft.

An ongoing theme in Lovecraft's work is the complete irrelevance of mankind in the face of the cosmic horrors that apparently exist in the universe, with Lovecraft constantly referring to the " Great Old Ones ": a loose pantheon of ancient, powerful deities from space who once ruled the Earth and who have since fallen into a deathlike sleep.

For most of the 20th century, the definitive editions ( specifically At the Mountains of Madness and Other Novels, Dagon and Other Macabre Tales, The Dunwich Horror and Others, and The Horror in the Museum and Other Revisions ) of his prose fiction were published by Arkham House, a publisher originally started with the intent of publishing the work of Lovecraft, but which has since published a considerable amount of other literature as well.

* Lovecraft: A Look Behind the Cthulhu Mythos ( ISBN 0-586-04166-4 ), written by Lin Carter in 1972, is a survey of Lovecraft's work ( along with that of other members of the Lovecraft Circle ) with considerable information on his life.

In 1999, Strange Company used Quake II in Eschaton: Nightfall, a horror film based on the work of H. P. Lovecraft.

The influence of the Nights on modern horror fiction is certainly discernible in the work of H. P. Lovecraft.

In 1969, he had written " Lovecraft in Retrospect ", an essay for the fanzine Shadow, " condemning work outright.

A chapter in the 2005 nonfiction work The Cult of Alien Gods: H. P. Lovecraft and Extraterrestrial Pop Culture is titled " The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen ".

In dark fantasy or horror the parallel world is often a hiding place for unpleasant things, and often the protagonist is forced to confront effects of this other world leaking into his own, as in most of the work of H. P. Lovecraft and the Doom computer game series, or Warhammer / 40K miniature and computer games.

Price also notes that Lovecraft admired the work of Lord Dunsany, who wrote The Gods of Pegana ( 1905 ), which depicts a god constantly lulled to sleep to avoid the consequences of its reawakening.

For example, after playing a music-based video game, some people may be motivated to learn how to play a real instrument, or after watching a TV show that references Faust and Lovecraft, some people may be inspired to read the original work.

Lovecraft's attempts to work this idea into a novel floundered ( a 500-word fragment survives, first published under the title " Azathoth " in the journal Leaves in 1938 ), although Lovecraftian scholar Will Murray suggests that Lovecraft recycled the idea into his Dream Cycle novella The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, written in 1926.

Lovecraft considered " The Music of Erich Zann " one of his best stories, in part because it avoided the overexplicitness that he saw as a major flaw in some of his other work.

However, beginning in the month after finishing his sequence, Lovecraft set to work on his story The Whisperer in Darkness ( 1931 ) where Yuggoth is recreated as a planet of fungoid beings given the name Mi-go.

The award statue itself is a bust of H. P. Lovecraft in honor of his prolific work and contributions to the world of fantasy.

Lovecraft scholar Don G. Smith claims that, of the scenes that are derived from Lovecraft's work, the " blasted heath doesn't live up to Lovecraft's description " and asserts that overall the film does not successfully capture Lovecraft's intent to " play ... with the idea of an alien life form completely different from anything humans can imagine ".

Lovecraft scholar Charles P. Mitchell referred to the film as faithful to the author's original work, but claimed that " he last twenty minutes of the film are so disjointed that they virtually ruin the entire film ".
