The first computer using a multiprogramming system was the British Leo III owned by J. Lyons and Co .. Several different programs in batch were loaded in the computer memory, and the first one began to run.

The first case was done by the Gorenstein – Walter theorem which showed that the only simple groups are isomorphic to L < sub > 2 </ sub >( q ) for q odd or A < sub > 7 </ sub >, the second and third cases were done by the Alperin – Brauer – Gorenstein theorem which implies that the only simple groups are isomorphic to L < sub > 3 </ sub >( q ) or U < sub > 3 </ sub >( q ) for q odd or M < sub > 11 </ sub >, and the last case was done by Lyons who showed that U < sub > 3 </ sub >( 4 ) is the only simple possibility.

He featured in a Lyons Maid ice cream commercial, but was rejected for another by Kit Kat.

Later the project was supported by J. Lyons & Co. Ltd., a British firm, who were rewarded with the first commercially applied computer, LEO I, based on the EDSAC design.

His first important commission was for two viaducts for the railway line between Lyons and Bordeaux, and the company also began to undertake work in other countries, including the church of San Marcos in Arica, Chile, which was an all-metal prefabricated building, manufactured in France and shipped to South America in pieces to be assembled on site.

Although Ross McPhee proposed that a hyper-disease may have been the cause of the extinction, the study by Lyons et al., demonstrated conclusively that a hyperdisease was unlikely to have caused the extinction.

St. Irenaeus (; Greek: ), ( 2nd century AD – c. 202 ) was Bishop of Lugdunum in Gaul, then a part of the Roman Empire ( now Lyons, France ).

During the persecution of Marcus Aurelius, the Roman Emperor from 161-180, Irenaeus was a priest of the Church of Lyons.

While Irenaeus was in Rome, a massacre took place in Lyons.

He was buried under the Church of Saint John in Lyons, which was later renamed St Irenaeus in his honour.

Similar examples were procured of Catharine Linck in Prussia in 1717, executed in 1721 ; Swiss Anne Grandjean married and relocated with her wife to Lyons, but was exposed by a woman with whom she had had a previous affair and sentenced to time in the stocks and prison.

The LEO I ( Lyons Electronic Office I ) was the first computer used for commercial business applications.

The Lyons machine was christened Lyons Electronic Office, or LEO.

Lyons used LEO I initially for valuation jobs, but its role was extended to include payroll, inventory, and so on.

The LEO project was also a pioneer in outsourcing: in 1956, Lyons started doing the payroll calculations for Ford UK and others on the LEO I machine.

J. Lyons and Co., one of the UK's leading catering and food manufacturing companies in the first half of the 20th century, sent two of its senior managers, Oliver Standingford and Raymond Thompson, to the USA in 1947 to look at new business methods developed during the Second World War.

On the recommendation of Wilkes, Lyons recruited John Pinkerton, a radar engineer and research student at Cambridge, as team leader for the project.

He thus broke the tenuous union which had been reached between the Greek and the Latin Churches at the Second Council of Lyons in 1274 and further compromise was rendered impossible.

In March, at about the same time as Lyons led his group of defectors from the right of the Labor Party across the floor, 5 left-wing NSW Labor MPs, supporters of New South Wales Premier Jack Lang, also split from the official Labor Party over the government's economic policies ( for Lyons they had been too radical, for the Langites they were not radical enough ), forming a " Lang Labor " group on the cross-benches and costing the government its majority in the House of Representatives.
