The Popeye cartoons passed on to United Artists in 1958 after its purchase of a. a. p., then to MGM in 1981 after they purchased UA.

After Ted Turner failed in an attempt to buy MGM / UA Entertainment Co. in 1986, he settled for ownership of the library, which included the a. a. p.

After a failed attempt to acquire CBS, Turner purchased the film studio MGM / UA Entertainment Co. from Kirk Kerkorian in 1986 for $ 1. 5 billion.

MGM / UA Entertainment was sold back to Kirk Kerkorian.

The MGM / UA Studio lot in Culver City was sold to Lorimar / Telepictures.

Five years later, Turner Broadcasting System, having failed to buy MGM, settled for ownership of the MGM / UA library.

This included almost all the pre-May 1986 MGM film and television library with the exception of those owned by United Artists ( i. e. James Bond franchise ), although some UA material were included such as the a. a. p.

WB tried to buy back the pre-1950 sound films and pre-August 1948 cartoons from MGM / UA in 1982, but the deal fell through.

This was especially noticeable on many pre-2000 video releases of color Warner Bros. cartoons released prior to August 1, 1948 – MGM / UA Home Video had to resort to faded 16mm " dupes " of the cartoons ( some with the logo of Associated Artists Productions – or a. a. p.

In 1981, UA was sold to Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer, and five years later, Ted Turner acquired the pre-May 1986 MGM library — which included the rights to MGM's cartoon characters like Tom and Jerry and Bosko.

Again produced by Charles Wallace for MGM / UA, it was released in the cinema with the James Bond film Octopussy, and later Wargames.

In 1998 MGM / UA took legal action against Sony and McClory in the United States to prevent Warhead 2000 AD from going into production.

MGM / UA abandoned the claim after settling with Sony.

The series was not picked up by a major network, but, distributed by MGM / UA Entertainment Co. Television, began a syndicated run in the fall of 1984.

Undeterred, Chayefsky and Gottfried shopped the script around to other studios, and eventually found an interested party in MGM Soon afterward, UA reversed itself and looked to co-finance the film with MGM, which for the past several years had distributed through UA in the US.

MGM agreed to let UA back on board, and gave it the international distribution rights, with MGM controlling North American / Caribbean rights.

The next year, MGM purchased UA, and consequently gained UA's share of Network.

Then, in 1986, media mogul Ted Turner purchased MGM / UA.

Home video rights to the MGM and UA titles were moved to Warner Home Video in 1990, using the MGM / UA Home Video label under license.

MGM noticed the video was performing well since " trendy twenty-somethings were throwing Showgirls irony parties, laughing sardonically at the implausibly poor screenplay and shrieking with horror at the aerobic sexual encounters.

His first wife, Betsy Blair, was suspected of being a Communist sympathizer and when MGM, who had offered Blair a part in Marty ( 1955 ), were considering withdrawing her under pressure from the American Legion, Kelly successfully threatened MGM with a pullout from It's Always Fair Weather unless his wife was restored to the part.

Hawks's next two films at MGM were the boxing drama The Prizefighter and the Lady and the bio-pic Viva Villa !, starring Wallace Beery as Mexican Revolutionary leader Pancho Villa.

Some multi-track recordings were made on optical sound film, which led to new advances used primarily by MGM ( as early as 1937 ) and Twentieth Century Fox ( as early as 1941 ).

Amenities at Warners were few compared to those for their fellow actors at MGM.

Milken was largely involved with kick-starting investments in Nevada, which for many years was the fastest-growing state in the U. S. Milken funded the gaming industry, newspapers and homebuilders ; among the companies he financed were MGM Mirage, Mandalay Resorts, Harrah's Entertainment and Park Place.

Jane Powell, Debbie Reynolds, Leslie Caron, and Janet Leigh were among those that she competed with for roles at MGM.

* Several pre-1950 talkies were sold to other studios for remakes, among them Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde ( 1931 ) and Make Me a Star ( 1932 ) to MGM ; The Letter ( 1929 ), A Farewell to Arms ( 1932 ) and One Sunday Afternoon ( 1933 ) to Warner Brothers ; and " The Dance of Life ( 1929 ), The Story of Temple Drake ( 1933 ) and " Swing High, Swing Low ( 1937 ) to 20th Century Fox.

While MGM had included five films in his contract, no more were made.

Devlin and Emmerich gave the rights to the franchise to MGM when they were working on their 1996 film Independence Day ( the rights to the Stargate film are currently owned by StudioCanal, with Lions Gate Entertainment handling most distribution in terms of international theatrical and worldwide home video releases ); however, MGM retains the domestic television rights.

In 2010, Warner announced its intention to buy Leavesden Film Studios near London, where the Harry Potter films were shot, making Warner Bros. the first studio since MGM in the 1940s to establish a permanent base in Europe.

It was reported in February 2009 that Leonardo DiCaprio was looking to produce one, then in 2011 MGM Studios were said to be planning a reboot with Seth Gordon signed on to direct although no writers or cast were yet on board.

MGM, Disney, Paramount and Warner Brothers were the largest studios producing these 5 to 10-minute " shorts ".

The shorts themselves were built around recycled film footage of production numbers cut from MGM musicals, such as Children of Pleasure, Lord Byron of Broadway, and the unfinished March of Time ( all 1930 ), which had been filmed in early Technicolor.

Two of Grace Kelly's uncles were prominent in the arts ; her father's eldest brother, Walter C. Kelly ( 1873 – 1939 ), was a vaudeville star whose nationally known act The Virginia Judge was filmed as a 1930 MGM short and a 1935 Paramount feature, and another older brother, George Kelly ( 1887 – 1974 ), estranged from the family due to his homosexuality, became renowned in the 1920s as a dramatist, screenwriter and director with a hit comedy-drama, The Show Off in 1924 – 25, and was awarded the 1926 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his next play, Craig's Wife.

Due to financial problems at the studio at the time, the entire production, including some already constructed sets and musical arrangements were sold to MGM.

The MGM moguls were careful to protect their contract stars from controversy, and Tracy wished to conceal his relationship with Hepburn from his wife, so it was hidden from the public.

They were aware that voters had probably mistaken their film with the 1956 MGM musical of the same name starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra which was based on The Philadelphia Story.

However these cartoons were not a success and in 1937 MGM fired Harman and Ising and purchased their studio to create MGM cartoons, thus obtaining the rights to Bosko.

Between 1951 and 1956 he made 11 films, two of which were MGM productions and the rest were low-budget British or independent productions.

This was necessary because MGM had merged with United Artists which had its own international distribution unit, but MGM was not allowed to leave the venture at the time ( they finally did in 2001, switching international distribution to 20th Century Fox ).

UA's international operations were merged into MGM's share of Cinema International Corporation ( the joint venture MGM was a partner since 1974 with Paramount Pictures and Universal Pictures ), eventually becoming United International Pictures.

He then partnered with Louis B. Mayer ’ s studio and helped create Metro Goldwyn Mayer ( MGM ) after they merged with two other studios.

" Mayer's company subsequently merged with two others to become Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer ( MGM ), with the 24 year-old Thalberg made part-owner and accorded the same position as vice president in charge of production.

Because MGM was not able to drop out from CIC ( which distributed MGM's films outside Anglo-America ), which they had previously joined in 1973, UA's international operations were merged with CIC ; the venture eventually changed their name to United International Pictures.

Parretti had bought a smaller company and renamed it Pathé Communications anticipating a successful buy of the original French company, but failed in that attempt, so instead merged MGM / UA with his former company, resulting into MGM / Pathé Communications Co. Having bought MGM / UA by overstating his own financial condition, within a year Parretti had defaulted to his primary bank, Crédit Lyonnais, which foreclosed on the studio in 1992, also resulting in the sale or closure of MGM / UA's string of US theaters.

In 1982, 20th Century-Fox Video merged with CBS Video Enterprises ( which had demerged with MGM / CBS Home Video after MGM merged with UA ) giving birth to CBS / Fox Video.

In 1986, Lorimar merged with television syndication firm Telepictures, becoming Lorimar-Telepictures ; later that year, they purchased the MGM lot from Ted Turner.

In 1960 ZIV was acquired by United Artists, which later merged with MGM.

From 1969 to 1973 Curb merged with MGM Records where Curb served as President of MGM and Verve Records.

In 2000 it became an MGM Mirage property when Mirage Resorts merged with MGM Grand Inc. to create MGM Mirage.
